    Just a thought.
Could it be that when one runs a scan with MSE and finds nothing, this is because MSE didn't let anything (virus) in the computer?

I'm of the thought that if one runs a scan using their anti virus program and finds virus on their system that should be worrisome.
Those virus had to pass by their anti virus program to get their in the first place.

I have use MSE and Malwarebytes Pro/Premium for years with out problems.

On this computer just yesterday I ran a full scan with MSE, Malwarebytes, SAS and AdwCleaner and found nothing.

To finish off my security scans I used Eset Online scan and found 2 little no nothing, maybe goodies left by Google. Used for tracking from my understanding.
    They are gone now.

I really don't know what is the best combination of security one should use.
I just know what has and still works for my systems.
I don't know if the built in Windows 7 firewall is the best. It does work for me.
It has no frills, bells, and whistles. I don't know how it does it job but I believe it does it's job.

I feel my Windows 7 systems are as safe as newer versions of Windows.
    Time will tell.

I wish it were that easy :)
Not the case mbam blocked many attempts when mse was seemingly asleep

I did a download recently open candy was sensed by Panda and mbam flagged and stopped :)
never in mse's existence has it ever flagged open candy as malicious and there are many similar items mse will never detect.

    You got me their ThrashZone.

MSE has never gave me a pop up flag when it stops something.
I don't really know if MSE has the pop up flag capability.
My understanding is just stop them and tells you nothing about the block.
    MSE has no frills.
When I don't get viruses I'm assuming that it works.

From a certain point of view

The greatest risk W7 users face is from M$py. Otherwise, the article is full of bull biscuits, starting with the claim Win 7 is ten years old.
MS may have started writing the new bits for W7 10 years ago, in which case, what they said "is true from a certain point of view".

Like LBB, I get no viruses or Trojans with the security combination I use, so I also assume it works. Norton Internet Security (also the firewall), Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes, and MSERT.

Open Candy was flagged by MSE & Windows Defender in the past but it is no longer flagged. The reason, Open Candy improved the opt out of install it. Panda virus actually messed up the install of the dell webcam installation. It also included Open Candy. I didn't install the Open Candy part of the software. An Open Candy registry key was created but I am not sure if it was caused by the dell webcam software or the Epson registration software. Epson registration software was easily remove by uninstalling it. No viruses program detected any Open Candy software install. I think it was AdwCleaner that detected the registry key and it also detects needed things in Google Chrome browser which isn't save to remove in my opinion.

Note, for reference some Panda virus programs uses the cloud.

Eset always flags "Open Candy" and always detects something called " google toolbar" which now comes standard with the CCleaner .exe program . CCleaner used to never have this but it is and has been a part of the executable program for well over a year now .

Downloading CCleaner portable is the way to avoid it , there is no security program that picks up the "google toolbar" except Eset online scanner but make sure you check the box for detection of "potentially unwanted programs " or you will miss it .

    RE: Open Candy

The latest version gets a clean bill of health from microsoft and has a digital signature:

    Adware:Win32/OpenCandy

Older versions of Open Candy that break guidelines might still be bundled with some program installers.

Personally I keep it off my system.

Open Candy to me is like the way the Ask tool bar was.
For a long time they used slutty ways to get into computer so I will never let them on my system no matter what their new image in the world is.

Actually if you turn off Ccleaner's auto update check and manually check for new builds the Slim Build is the best one to go for. It does not contain any extras (toolbars or anything else)

    Ccleaner Builds: https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

Note: After a new version is released it takes anywhere from a few days up to a week before the Slim Build is listed on the page for download. It's always released days after the regular build.
