Weird and tragic story
Debian Linux founder Ian Murdock dead at 42 • The Register
https://bits.debian.org/2015/12/mour...n-murdock.htmlWith a heavy heart Debian mourns the passing of Ian Murdock, stalwart proponent of Free Open Source Software, Father, Son, and the 'ian' in Debian.
Ian started the Debian project in August of 1993, releasing the first versions of Debian later that same year. Debian would go on to become the world's Universal Operating System, running on everything from embedded devices to the space station.
Odd indeed....
Condolences for his family.
I very much enjoy using Debian and use it both for hosting servers and for running on some of my desktop/laptop systems as the main OS. In my mind it is the definitive and optimal version of GNU/Linux, even for gaming (SteamOS is built on it too). I'm very grateful for the work and vision that has made it a reality and the best OS I have ever used.
Pretty much every major version of GNU/Linux is built off of or based on Debian. There's a reason for that. These are people who work diligently, often times without thanks and gratitude, for the benefit of everyone.
I still willingly use Windows 7 of course, but hopefully one day I won't need to use Windows at all. We should all be so lucky.
The world is a better place for having had Ian.
