I've been running Win 7 Pro x64 on my desktop since the beginning of September. We are now running Win 7 on 5 computers in the house, the last was a laptop ordered on October 22 with 7 Pro preinstalled. 3 of the others were upgrades from XP, and 1 was a upgrade Vista. We are very happy. Yes, the OS fades into the background, but familiarity does not build contempt. Instead it builds comfort, like a cozy pair of slippers. It just works.

With 440gb out of the 465gb total drive space seen on the drive with the one remaining 64bit RC install there I've been booting one day in the 64bit retail Ultimate, the next in the 32bit retail, and then the RC still making some rather interesting finds.

Despite the intentional clutter and volume of programs the RC tasks there it still performs well! With a few old programs that love to crash(some old pc games in mind there) they seem to be running equally on all three installations with each 7 seeing an instant recovery if a crash occurs.

Vista saw an improvement there over what had been the case with XP where Windows itself would simply lock solid at times! Gamers will find 7 to be far more stable with an improved crash control recovery and a performer as well.

The only odd crash seen with 7 to date was with the tuner card software initializing for the first time on the 32bit retail install. Both monitors went totally black and the reset solved that one fast. Upon the herd boot the "start Windows normally" option was selected and the tuner card app started immediately once the desktop was finished loading. The input picture came up normally and for 7 all was well!

I'm loving windows7, the only issue I've had is with third parties who promised compatibility and don't.
The netgear PS121u2 print server is a case of point, it's cost me a fortune in tech support calls and stillnothing.

The support guy said to me that driver would be availiable in two weeks, which was a month ago, and on the windows 7 compatible harware site, they show it as having compatible drivers, so Netgear have lied to them too.

So until the problem is fixed, the only thing I can do is go onto the forum at netgear and complain every day and log a complaint with microsoft compatibility website every day.

Does anyone else know of a print server to use a usb printer with, which works in 7?

I have been using Windows 7 for merely 6 days and I've never had any problems with it. Prior to that, I used Vista for 4 months where I experienced constant need for reboots (due to sluggishness, crashes and freezes). But I've never encountered that in the new OS.

I can say that my experience with Windows 7 is all good. No negatives yet.

It's been pretty awesome for me. I had Vista which wasn't that great to me but Windows 7 was amazing 8/10.

It doesn't have to say 7 on the versions any update supports as long as you see at least Vista and Vista 64bit.

PS121v2 Print Server Software version 2.0.2

    For Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista x86/Vista x64
    Answer

For the most Vista version driver and application updates will go right on 7 and work without a hitch since both versions are close compatibility wise. I run into this with other addons like a tuner card, HP printer, etc. where you will only see a Vista update available. But they still work.

After Beta and RC I am now running an RTM. No real problems at all - just a few minor things that I still have to figure out. And after I installed the Vista WMM (this W7 Live Movie Maker is really dismal) and the Vista Sidebar, my real estate looks furnished again.

    Improved

My early experience with Windows 7 was disappointing because of slow performance after resuming from sleep/hibernation. I restored the factory settings of my computer and reinstalled most of my preferred programs. So far performance is very good without any slow downs. The one thing that I didn't do compared to my first few weeks with Windows 7? I haven't allowed Windows Update to download and install updates no matter how important it is.

My computer has never run better then it does with the Windows 7 OS. I have run XP Pro SP3 and Vista Ultimate SP2 and neither performed as swiftly and smoothly as 7 does on my system.

MS really did something right this time!
