Windows 7's first 100 days: So how were yours?

I do admit that Windows 7 is a very stable OS but.....
Some drivers are still not available for a large part of current hardware that it not being sold in stores anymore. Windows 7 is not compatible with alot of software that was running fine with Windows Xp that was the reason why we never upgrade to Vista because of that fact and now Windows 7 has the same issue you need to install Microsoft Virtual PC which is also garbage Sun Virtual Box is 10 times better that Virtual PC. That version of Windows XP on the virtual PC is a special version that I cannot run certain software on that either.
XP Mode Is a waste of time.

Windows 7 needs to be revised to fix the compatibility mode it doesn't work correctly
It only looks better but basically thats it

Wlecome to the Se7en Forums! foolproof2k

Actually what many don't realize is how to see older XP programs install and run on even the 64bit 7! As seen in XP and Vista as well you have the compatibility mode tab seen in the properties screen there. With 7 one more option known as the "troubleshoot compatibilty" item was also added onto the right click menu.

It can quite useful for setting any older program's installer as well as the main executable in an XP or Vista mode. See the attached image.

But you have to understand that the fact that old XP programs do not run on Windows7 is not the problem of Win7 - it is the problem of the owners of those programs. If you want to run XP programs forever, you have to run XP forever. I fully understand MS cutting out some of this old stuff because legacy is the biggest road block for progress. But this time they gave you at least XP mode - whatever that does. I never tried it because I come from Vista. And all my Vista programs run perfectly.

Here I have 98-XP programs running on the 64bit 7 without fuss. In fact some of the old pc games actually go on easier and run better then some of the newer titles.

As far as drivers and application updates many will see Vista on them not being named 7 but work just as well. The thing to find out first for any new version is always what does work and what simply won't no matter what you try.

Of course some things just won't as part of the entire upgrade process like the ISP's own modems they provide seeing updates only upto 2003-08? You end up buying your own in order to run the 64bit Windows since they are outdated!

Great stable OS

Hi All,
I have had Win7 Ultimate 32bit installed since September when I attended a Microsoft seminar. I have been around since DOS and Windows 1.1. This should give you an idea of my expereince and age.

Anyway, I must state that Win7 has been a definate pleasure most of the time. It has been an easy clean insatll on my system and found all the drivers needed to get me up and running quickly. Even with a few updates I feel this is probably the best OS Microsoft has produced. After the initial learning curves I think I have a good handle on it. Now that we made Bill Gates feel great now my other comments.

My biggest gripe is the security system. If I'mthe only user and have Administrative rights why do I have to tell Win7 who I am before looking at hidden directoris? User Account Control UAC seems to be the problem and so far I have to live with it.

The bells and whistles in Win7 are ok and I use AeroShake the most.

So that is it for now and plan in the near future to install a 32 & 64bit Home Premium upgrade version over my Ultimate to see how that works. I just thought how dumb the upgrade is as you must have Vista or WinXP installed first on your HD or you won't get you install completed.
What happened tothe great idea of please put your old OS CD in the drive so I can verify you have one idea. Way too simple I guess.

See you all around.

Well, I don't know about that. Yes, Win7 is smaller, faster and they have automated more functions. But they also dropped some useful Vista functions, spread the controls all over the place and added some useless eye candy. So I am still ambivalent about it.

First off Welcome to the Se7en Forums! IggyAZ

I find it curious you would want to downgrade from the full featured edition of 7 when you already have that working well plus the additional features like creating a full system image or access to the BitLocker tool seen only the Ultimate and Enterprise editions. The AppLocker is another one as well.

The idea of an upgrade disk to start with is to upgrade from a previous version which nulls out the previous. MS was simply changing a few things to prevent people from using upgrade media as full version there. You can read a good MS blog about that at Microsoft SMB Community Blog : Regardless of what any hack says, a Windows 7 Upgrade is an Upgrade. What you need to know.

As far as the UAC the new one was made easier with a slide adjuster in 7 over the single check box only option seen with Vista. Here I simply turn it off to start with with some other system guards inplace for any unknown startups.

Windows 7 Ultimate is the only way to go.

Thanks for the welcome Night Hawk.
I'm still staying with Win7 Ultimate with its extra features. I just wanted to see how much difference the install was in actual size on HD as well as memory and loaded programs. Like you siad the upgrade must be installed on a Windows OS and can not be installed on a blank HD. I did read a few trick to get around this but I guess Microsoft wants to keep everyone honest.

Now I have to figure out how to remove the single user selection after recovering from sleep mode. My first install went from sleep right to the desktop.

I also removed hybernation mode and file which makes things start backup from sleep quicker.

I also turned off Restore and Recycle bins for my backup drives. Any thoughts on doing this from anyone?

Anyway I find this forum very informative for all users and will read and learn more each time I visit.

Have a great day!

I've been running 7 a lot longer than a hundred days (beta builds, y'know ;)), and no OS in the world - not Snow Leopard, not even big boy UNIX - has anything on 7.

Kudos on a great product, Microsoft!

P.S. Where is the desert properties you have to sell? :)

I never use hibernation or sleep here being on a desktop that sees a lot of use! In fact the power plans are all set to never turn the display off.

That's due to being busy most of the time. I simply shut everything down for the night or day when done.

For problems seen when coming out of sleep or hibernation plan on a full system restart right away to refresh everything especially device drivers then sitting idle and not active.

I just asked the IT guy at work, and we will not be upgrading to Windows 7 anytime soon.

At least I get to enjoy Windows 7 at home.

It's been a fabulous experience. This is an OS that feels like many smart people actually put their minds together and came up with good ideas.

my days are wonderfull =)
i am having a bit of trouble since the last month (moved to x64) but i think it's my new hardware fault =)

Actually when i started using 7100, it was a pain to have to go everyday to work and spend 8 hours per day @ xp.

7 is all i ever asked, an o.s. made for people, i can run 2000000 appz and still don't get my taskbar full + quick tracking the ones i need, i (gladly) don't have to keep remembering anymore in wich of my hdds are the videos i want cause now i got all grouped in libraries....

i'm not sure whatelse to expect from an o.s. now =)

I still one of the RCs(7100 builds) still running on drive here nearly completly full as well as loaded up with more programs then most would see on their own system and it still acts much like a fresh install of Windows! Compare that to anything seen with previous versions? 7 comes out on top every time! :D

The image here shows much fragmentation from everything being piled onto it as well as having a drive cluttered up quite a bit there. That's 433gb taken up and only 66gb free at the moment on a 500gb sata.

I had some things with compatibility, but fixed them the first days and it has been Mother ****ing GOOD! By the way, about the upgrade offer June 26th, don't believe it, i bought my laptop in April, but I bought the acer offer, and it worked completely fine, you may want to upgrade all your developer products before upgrading.

With me I started with the 7000 beta release so it's been a lot longer than 100 days & haven't turned back since for day to day usage & gaming. ;)
I'm currently running the x64 version of W7U & finally have all the programs, drivers & codecs working perfectly! :geek:
The video codecs were the last thing with playback problems but lately DivX put out some new drivers specifically for W7 that fixed the issues with playback!
Now all of my video's no matter the codec play nicely on WMP, WMC, DivX player & my favorite for playing vids, WinDVD 9 HD Plus! Blu-ray! :p

I have used most of the Windows offerings since Windows 95 and I must say at last Windows 7 is the best operating system I have installed and used to date. Well done Microsoft.
