Microsoft will soon stop nagging users to upgrade to Windows 10

All you Windows 7/8/8.1 users out there who want to upgrade to Windows 10 have until July 29th to pull the trigger, after which that previously free upgrade will cost you $119. But if you're happy with your current operating system and are tired of Microsoft's constant nags to upgrade, you'll be pleased to know that those too will cease after that date.

In a statement to WinBeta, Microsoft had this to say:

"Details are still being finalized, but on July 29th the Get Windows 10 app that facilitates the easy upgrade to Windows 10 will be disabled and eventually removed from PCs worldwide. Just as it took time to ramp up and roll out the Get Windows 10 app, it will take time to ramp it down."

All this is assuming that Microsoft does indeed pull the plug on the free offer at the end of July.

So will clean installs be faster after that date for 7 & 8.x or will they be even slower?

I have no reason to doubt that they will end the free offer to upgrade to W10 July 29, 2016. The VP went on to say "The Get Windows 10 app that facilitates the easy upgrade to Windows 10 will be disabled and eventually removed...". The use of the word 'eventually' is very interesting. Not one bit specific and open to interpretation. I really can not believe that they are going total lights out on this. Ad banners, carrots, sticks, FUD, etc., etc., etc. - anything is possible and likely. Sharpen your elbows and put that battle gear on - this is going to get ugly.

The only times MS has been specific lately is when they're shutting something down!

I'll rephrase that "Shutting something decent down!"

The end of the app doesn't necessarily mean the end of a free updgrade. It's currently possible to do a clean install and get your license transfered to W10. It may be a huge PITA for all I know, but it's possible. There's no reason they couldn't keep that option in place in hopes of enticing more holdouts.
