    W10 takes a bite out of W7

W10 gained ~2% and W7 lost ~2% market share in July.

If this keeps up, W10 will overtake W7 early next year.

    XP also somehow gained ~0.5%!

    Hi,
Seeing 10 was sold as free and shows 20%
I don't see how they would gain another 20+% by the end of next year :)

Stranger things have happened and they removed quite a few pirate/ illegal copies in the process in this sort time
Seeing 7 is still nearly 50% will be a tough chore to reduce now that 10 is no longer free
Will there be a boom in computer or cell phone/ surfaces sold next year ?
    No telling :)

Ever wondered what the statistics would have been like if the end-user(s) had to purchase the Windows 10 OS from the 29th July 2015?

Considering Windows 7 was never a free OS, these statistics are somewhat obscured and whoever has transitioned over to 10 (notice the intentional lack of the word UPGRADE) is now stuck with it whether they like it or not (linux distros being the alternative or upgrade which is why MS have an interest in linux, hell their windows update service was layered upon linux based apache servers for years).

Windows 7 was a logical choice from either Windows XP or Windows Vista in the good old days of home computing.
As for Windows 8 and 8.1, this was a sign of things to come via integrated OS malware and ruthless corporate tactics.

So, for me these stats are irrelevant albeit media orchestrated with the intention to mislead.

I do feel for the end-user(s) who fell foul to the GWX campaign without their approval.
I think MS may have long term issues with trust after this campaign.

I can't see any chance of that happening early next year. The rise in July was probably due to some hold outs jumping on the upgrade at the last minute. I think it will take a lot longer than that for 10's market share to get past 7.

W10 only has to gain ~13% to overtake W7, if all of that gain comes from W7's market share (like it effectively did this month).

3 months ago it looked like W10 might overtake W7 in early 2018.

Aren't OEMs banned from selling W7 (or going to be banned soon)?

I suppose some people might buy (or downgrade to) W8.1.

IMO, W10 is less annoying to use than the W8 Series.

    August's figure will be interesting.

A buddy sent me this link to an article. Not sure of the reputation of the author as I've never visited the site, but he raised an interesting thought about the sales and adaptation of 10 as a whole

From the way I understand oems can't sell new windows 7, however they can keep selling refurbished as along as they want. They can probably make a new system into a refurbished system real easy.

It's an interesting article, but I approach it with a grain of salt. His numbers may be accurate, but there are a couple of grammatical errors in the first two paragraphs (a serious red flag for me that the source may not be as professional as thought, or it is not properly edited and vetted), causing me to question the thoroughness or validity of the research involved. Also, he quotes a statistic from Microsoft with no attribution, basically saying (and I paraphrase) "...some guy at MS told me this..."

However, if the article is accurate, those are certainly some sobering numbers for MS to consider. Maybe things aren't as rosy in the Windows 10 wonderland as they think?

Depends on the exact definition of "success".

    Windows 10:

    • Is currently the #2 Desktop OS (in ~1 year)
    • Has exceeded the Peak Market Share of the W8 Series (in ~1 year)
    • Has equalled/exceeded the Peak Market Share of Vista

Those points could be used to argue that W10 is already a success.

OTOH, it will be a very long time before W10 exceeds XP's Peak Desktop OS Market Share (it may never do it).
