Definition of OSX: A bloated and overpriced compilation of tweaked freeware that only runs on hardware that costs 4-5x what it's actually worth, designed to be used by people who couldn't program a VCR
yeah i know its an old post, but the whole attitude thing applies still. My friends who have bought macs just seem to go on and on at how brilliant they are when pretty much now its just an over priced shiny unix that has everything locked down. I've shown them ubuntu running compiz and you should see the look on their faces, oh and those facts of "yeah no virus' for macs" seem kind of obsolete when you tell them "50 for mac, 4 for linux, a few trillion for windows. Oh and the Linux ones, you have to build and sudo install"
Credit where credits due: webkit is awesome, but apple only Opensource it because they reused a bunch of KHTML stuff for it, they have to.
PS OOTB (out of the box) cmd+click combo isn't the same in my eyes. Also I dont know why, but when I picture mac's in my head I see macbooks over iMacs. Totally forgot that mighty mouse thing
50?
Only Mac OS Classic (version 9 and below) had 50 viruses due to a buggy design. after Apple bought NEXTStep to reobtain Steve Jobs, they rewrote Mac OS around nextstep (except for quicktime, that was ported). There have been maybe three limited-impact trojans, and there has been a proof-of-concept virus which is now considered art and has been purchesed by a museum.
Personally IMnsHO it's a good thing that they used OSS, because all they really did was taken proven software and combine it in a way that makes the computer very easy to use. (try having your grandma set up compiz, especially if she has the graphics card from hell.
Also, Apple open-sourced Darwin (the kernel) and I think something else.
We have thousands of Windows Machines and under 20 MAC's. Just so everyone knows MAC's have all the problems Windows Machines have. I cannot stand it when someone tells me a MAC is perfect because it is not. I have seen everything go wrong with a MAC they are not perfect.
Another thing we have seen more malware type websites that are hard on Windows Machines are now infecting MAC's too. Thank God for a superior Hardware Firewalls, IDS Servers, and Web Filtering Servers or the MAC's would be just as hard hit.
We are seeing less viruses and more malware epically from web sites. (The malware may lead to a virus or some sort of SPAM bot)
So far I have not seen any of the malware web sites infect any other *NIX OS just MAC OS.
