Windows 7 growing faster than Vista, overtakes Mac OS X

Windows 7 sold well during the 2009 holiday season, and the results are showing up, not only in sheer revenue, but in the OS market share numbers as well. Nevertheless, in December 2009, Linux was the only operating system to show positive percentage growth in market share.
Between November and December 2009, Windows market share dropped 0.31 percentage points (from 92.52 percent to 92.21 percent), Mac OS dipped 0.01 percentage points (from 5.12 percent to 5.11 percent), and Linux edged forward 0.02 percentage points (from 1.00 percent to 1.02 percent).

    Come on now guys.

Is this really even news? Apple combined I think with everything they make on the market today is holding between 5% of the total market share. So with the rate of computers being bought it would not take long for it to out sell Apple computers.

On a positive note it is still nice to see :)

I'm intrigued by the fact that a couple Mac owners that I know are all "I never get a BSOD, or a virus, so Mac must be better." I heard that the other day, and just to poke a little fun, I said,"For what they cost I should hope not!"

In all fairness....my last Apple computer time was on an Apple IIe when I was in 8th or 9th grade, so I have no idea how good or bad the current ones are.

These numbers in this article frankly don't surprise me, but I wonder how the Mac faithful might try to spin them.

Today Apple's computers work fine, but now with Windows 7 I just don't see it worth the switch to one. Mainly for the cost as they don't really do anything better now a days then a Windows PC. Windows even has 64bit Photoshop. Apple might have a slightly better video editing software but unless you do that for your job no real reason to use one. Window's has many strong and very great video editing software available for it.

Viruses and other crap that is loaded on Windows is not Windows fault in a sense. It is all user error. I can keep my computer virus free for years and when I do get one it is just because I was just doing something stupid. If you just use a little common sense you should really never have your Windows computer mess up on you. I don't really do much anymore on my computer then just surf the web and listen to music on my Zune and it runs great without any problems with getting a virus etc.

Also Apple's market share will never over take Window's for the price alone. Just to many good deals on PC's for well under $1,000 and to many people that can't or don't want to spend $1,000 or more on a computer that all they will use it for is to load up an internet browser and save some pictures to it.

Like said above...this should be no surprise...I am finding it almost impossible to find a trace of Windows Vista at a retailer around here...

The only people that should use Vista now are folks who bought a Vista license and aren't willing to drop cash again for another OS...

It will take a two or three years but Windows 7 will become the Supreme OS in the market share...especially when XP support dies and we see the arrival of Windows 7 SP1 & SP2

    Hi there
don't forget there was a HUGE pent up demand from XP users who didn't want to go the VISTA route.

Now W7 has been shown to be DECENTLY runnable on even older computers (within reason of course) there isn't much of a reason NOT to upgrade.

The idea of "Virtualisation" is also understood by many many more people and on those rare occasions you still NEED XP it's easy even on a small laptop to fire up a Windows XP Virtual machine --much better than a dual boot in any case.

    Cheers

i agree, our PC's have finally become stable enough to run various OS's at once, while i've still only got xp mode on mine and really that was just to play with i know people and wouldn't doubt there are some here that are running linux, osx, and xp all within their windows 7 environment. it's exciting to think of the possibilities the future of virtualisation might hold for us.

All windows users (like me) should "support" mac/linux, as the competition keeps MS from delivering below par products.
