My college ISP does this. If the college detects that someone on your network (say my roommate) has a virus on his computer, it will shut down all internet access to your dorm room till you can prove to them that you don't have one. :P

It sucks, but hey, it prevents viruses from spreading around campus. The annoying part is when it's on a weekend, and they're not there till Monday...

now i can see maybe having security software makers incorporating a feature in their antivirus / spyware / trojan / rootkit / firewall programs that detect which isp you have and inform them if you are infected. then have the ips give you x amount of chances to clean your system or face being disconnected from the net until you prove you have.

Wasn't you just complaining about companies spying on you from another thread...and now you want people to be monitored and reported to ISPs???

there is a huge difference and you know it. it is one thing for microsoft to control all of your software and pry into files that do not concern them. it is another to write the security software so it tells someone that you are infected. the isp would not be searching your system, nor making changes to it, nor would the security software be sending the isp any other info. they would simply being informed that you might be putting other users at risk.

The ISP's would NEVER do this.

    1. To much hassle.
    2. Possibility of 'false positives'.
    3. Can't bill people who you disconnect.

Doesn't matter how you want to season it...still spying

The anti-virus makers would have to inject some type of spying agent on your machine to monitor for virus activities...they would report if anything is found. Think about what would happen if a...false positive was found or if they decided to take in more data about your activities...

Its spying...there is no denying it
