Yeah, I think that the biggest benefit to SSD's are the extremely low access times. But this really isn't critical when it comes to data storage space. I cannot see forking over this kinda money for storage. You could spend a tiny fraction of that cost on a RAID array of nice disks and have massive amounts of storage space with extremely fast speeds...perhaps even faster then the SSD with enough spindles.

While not quite the $200,000/GB that Dwarf quoted from back in '82, I remember forking over $500+ at Egghead for my first 540MB WD Caviar (code named "FISH_EGGS") in the early '90s. And I thought I was going whole hog at the time.

Who knew that I would be buying USB flash drive ~15 years later that was almost 15x the size for ~4% of the cost? (OCZ Rally2 8GB for ~$20 AR from Amazon ~2 years ago... don't have any HDD #s handy, so this'll have to do.)

Granted, none of us want to wait 15 years to pick up an affordable SSD, but all in good time, my friends... all in good time.

Got an even older deal $ 550 for a 80 megabyte Western Digital MFM HD for a 286 AT PC computer in 1987 That was the largest HD at the time

Since the primary benefit of a SSD is to run an OS from, what would a person need with all that extra space? I have been considering a small SSD, but even that has a number of issues to consider.
Maybe most useful for someone that only uses a laptop, removing some(not all) of the worry if you drop it, and adding to the battery life?

I've been considering an SSD but since I'm on a laptop I'd have to buy one that has atleast 128GB of space and thats kinda expensive too. I guess I could get two, one Express Card /34 SSD and one regular, however I haven't seen much about the express card/34 ssd's.

Just checked Ebay, you can pick the 500Gb version up for just over £1,500. Not bad, if you have the money.

Plus, i wonder how quick the degrade in speed will be?

My own view is that SSDs havent had the proven amount of time and testing that HDs have in order to know exactly how reliable they are over a period of time.
