Windows 7 Now Ahead Of Vista? Probably Not

    Posted: 06 May 2010
It’s a big and bold claim to make, but Janco Assocoiates seem to be willing to stick there neck out and claim that Windows 7 after just 7 months has overtaken Windows Vista in terms of market share. The managing consulting firm has released figures regarding Browser and Operating Systems Market Share.
According to Janco, Windows 7 now holds an impressive 14.8% of the OS Market Share, over taking Windows Vista which they say holds 12.6% of the market.
Janco CEO Victor Janulaitis had this to say
“There are now more users of Windows 7 than Vista. That is a major factor in their improved record earnings. The last OS that was accepted as quickly in the market was XP. Vista’s market share has peaked and is in the process of being decommissioned in most enterprises. The last six months have been a mixed bag for Microsoft. While they have good news on the OS front, their browser market share has fallen to the level that it was in 1998.”

However other Web Analytic firms as well as myself aren’t so convinced. For a start Janco only focuses on the corporate segment of the U.S. market. Straight away that affects the results, and Net Applications, one of the most reliable sources for market share statistics pegged Windows 7’s usage share during April at just 11.7%, under Vista’s 15.6%.
However, Janco may just be giving us a look into the future, while their stats are a bit optimistic for the moment, by the end of June they could be true.
If we look back at the rate of growth since Windows 7 was released, it looks set to over take Windows Vista by the end of June.
Of course the old war horse that is Windows XP is still holding strong with an impressive 63.4% of the market, and while it is now in “extended support” it will still continue to receive security updates until 2014, which makes it the longest supported OS ever produced by Microsoft.
Windows 7 has got off to a flying start, but to overtake Windows Vista at this stage is a bit optimistic,
What do you think? Do you believe Janco’s figures or do you think Windows 7 still has a bit to go until it overtakes Vista?

    LOL.

Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see.

    Vista is a great o/s.

If anybody says otherwise, it is hard to trust their judgemnet.

Of course 7 will sell by default - when people buy a new pc it comes with 7 on it.

I don't think you can buy a new pc with Vista on it , or XP for that matter ( at least not easily ).

Vista is still readily available from quite a few sources, as is XP, alot of smaller PC shops give you the option of which one you want, agree with you partially SIW2 about Vista, I cant say its great (and yes i did use it, pretty much from day 1) but after they ironed out the initial kinks it was alright, doesnt hold a candle to windows 7 of course (although to be fair, i actually preferred Vista over XP)

You cannot be serious? Vista, while aesthetically pleasing, functionality wise was terrible, not to mention compatibility issues run a muck.

I went from XP to 7 a few months ago, after completely skipping over Vista. Windows 7 is a great update from XP. I am very happy with it. I went back to XP for about a month, thinking I didn't want 7, but I missed 7, so now I am back for good, and don't plan on looking back at at XP on any of my systems at all. I have had zero issues with 7.

I too just gsot Win 7 on my new tower. Although faster and with some enhancements I did have no porblem with XP. They seem to have over thought things. My biggest issue is getting drivers to run what ran fine on XP and the window automatically hides when I go to my home page. A real pain!

I read on Engadget that Windows 7 had already more market share than Vista, and the 3 tracked versions of OSX, combined... It seems like a reliable source, and I believe it.

Also a source 'not' affiliated with Microsoft showed that an incredibly high amount of crashes, for Vista, from day one through some time through '08, sorry don't have the dates, were not caused by Vista. Nvidia caused over 30% of crashes, ATI 18%, and so on. The "market" wasn't ready for it. Sure Vista had a few issues, but the majority of problems were software developers, hardware too, not getting onboard and making their software/hardware function on Vista, simple as that. I used Vista from day one, loved it, I hated the holes in XP, and the malware, etc etc. Had no issues except I missed hardware accelerated sound, and being able to use 3rd party wireless software properly. Other than that it turned into a very solid OS.

An old security report, very interesting back then: http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/22/r...s-x-and-linux/
    and http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/24/m...es-than-any-m/

Windows 7 is Vista 2, and is what Vista should have been.

I'll try to find more sources, one source doesn't sit well with most, but I very much like Engadget, and they're pro-Apple...so... Seems transparent to me at least.

    Unless!

Unless there is real advancement and 7 becomes dated I am never going to change from it. It's pretty damn good! And, so was Vista!
