Well it's going to be just like any other MS product where the best results are seen using "their own" browser and not any 3rd party addon. They assume you are running Windows when going to download Windows to start with.

And it was the IE 8 seen in the 7000 build still being beta that saw all the problems! When first out IE 8 trashed the XP install at the time and saw some annoyances in teh beta builds being there as well. The finished IE 8 on the other smokes past the rest for the most part especially for any MS downloads in particular.

In all three XP, Vista, and 7 IE 8 was compared to Opera 9.64 and Chrome until XP was replaced by the 32bit RC. If you are not in one of the 7000 build be sure to use the finished version of IE 8.

It hasn't finished downloading. It converts to an ISO file when finished.

If you are using the MS downloader that will see the 3 digit extension changed to iso once the downloader has verified everything is 100% finished as Win7User512 pointed out there. Try restarting it if you can to see that will pick up and finish. Otherwise you may end needing to start all over with a second download.

I suspect the user may have exited the download when it said 100%, but it was doing the checksum (i think it does one).

That would be about right. When you see the "done" appear at the bottom even while it may sit at 100% and all activity is stopped then browse to the download folder and right click to see what is shown in the properties>general tab in the opening for displaying the file name or renaming the file.

i would advise to let it do its checksum as errors in transmission might cause errors later on...

Here I didn't rush for the betas and now the RCs but simply let them sit for some time before going to see them burned to disk once I knew there was no further activity. The MS downloader is like the 100% insurance by design that would be expected to verify everything before it stops completely.

From what I recall from seeing those available on the late 4th I left the 32bit RC which finished well before the 64bit simply sit for about a good 30 minutes or so before going to burn that one to disk while still waiting on the other.

When you look at the image there the 11:39pm was actually the MS local time when the 64bit download completed apparently. That was a good 6hrs. after starting it a few minutes after the 32bit.
