Reminder: Windows 7 RC will expire Effective June 1, 2010.

    Posted: 23 May 2010
Description of Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) expiration dates and functionality.

Important We strongly recommend that users who are running any of these prerelease versions of Windows 7 migrate their computers to a release version of Windows 7, or to another operating system before the listed expiration dates.

    Windows 7 RC expiration
Effective June 1, 2010, Windows 7 RC will expire.

To continue using your computer, you should prepare to install the retail release version of Windows 7 or install an earlier version of Windows before the June 1, 2010 expiration date. You will be unable to upgrade from Windows 7 RC to the retail release version of Windows 7. However, you can back up or transfer your data to your next or previous operating system.

    Windows 7 RC expiration functionality

Effective June 1, 2010, Windows 7 RC expires:
Windows starts to a black desktop.
Windows 7 RC users are presented with a Windows Activation screen. The screen states that the Windows that you are running is not genuine.
Computers that are running Windows 7 RC restart every two hours.

Wow, it seems to have taken so long to get to this point, and yet it's been less than a year since Windows 7 was officially released.

It would actually be kind of fun to watch this happen.

Not on my machine, of course...

Oh, we're waiting for them. This has been well-publicised, and people still running the RC version of Windows 7 shouldn't really be surprised when it finally starts to happen. Since the expiry date of the RC was meant to allow people to use the OS until the RTM was released (and for a period after, to give them chance to purchase the RTM version), Microsoft could quite easily have changed the date following its release, which they haven't. In fact, I consider this date to be quite generous, considering that it is 7 months after the RTM release.

I'm sure we'll see 'a few' requests for assistance.

It was quite generous to let this go for 7 months.

7 month is long . Even trial software was like for 30 days only. It is generous to say

As far as being "generous," wasn't the speculated release date for Windows 7 still sometime in January 2010 when the RC came out?
