ASUS exec talks Eee PC sales, Windows 7

    Posted: 20 Oct 2008
ASUS' Eee PC -- frequently cited as the original netbook -- is still doing extremely well, claims the company's CEO. Jerry Shen says that over 4 million Eees have been sold since the product's debut last year, and the company hopes to reach 5 million before the end of 2008. The Eee line has extended to include several netbooks, and an all-in-one desktop computer, the EeeTop. It is facing increasing competition however, from companies such as Acer, Dell and MSI.

Shen notably adds that touchscreen Eees, confirmed earlier this month, should begin shipping in early 2009. The systems may potentially be usable in tablet form, and could also have Windows 7 as soon as mid-2009, even though Microsoft has repeatedly stated that it is not rushing 7 to compensate for failings in Windows Vista. Although Chen's statement could prove inaccurate, Windows 7 is known to be heavily themed around supporting touch and tablet control.

I sure hope they don't rush 7 out; they need to do this one right!

My Dad got one of those little lappys. They're not too bad actually, apart from some build quality issues. (On his model anyway)

I agree. The significant point here is these Asus Ee's run best on Linux, ok on XP and crap with Vista. Does this mean several versions of Windows 7 a la Vista, or will 7 really be a nippy lightweight OS.

I really don't think there's going to be anything 'lightweight' about 7!
But I sure am looking forward to it! I would like to be among the first to install the final release.
That's why I started the new machine now, so it'll be running good when 7 is ready.

Hmmm. Unlikely. Be nice if it were, though.

Dads got XP on his, it's certainly not what you could call lightning fast. I shudder to think how Vista would go. I don't think he'd thank me if I were to put Linux on it however...

There's one way to find out; put it on and see how he reacts ...

    Keep us informed!

Perhaps I didn't mean lightweight in the sense of underpowered etc, but rather meaning would need to be trim and tight without all the bloatware

Oh, I don't have to do that to know how he'd react....

It would be along the lines of this:

I'm not going anywhere near that

He's not as, how shall I put this nicely, as "technically open minded as I am"

Yeah that would be something; to brick his system!

    Show him the RSoD!
