India develops world's cheapest "laptop" at $35

Quote:
India has come up with the world's cheapest "laptop," a touch-screen computing device that costs $35.

India's Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal this week unveiled the low-cost computing device that is designed for students, saying his department had started talks with global manufacturers to start mass production.

"We have reached a (developmental) stage that today, the motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything," he told a news conference.

That's pretty interesting but since they don't give any real details and don't even have a working prototype it is vaporware for the time being. The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Foundation has been trying for years to develop a $100 laptop but their current (shipping) model costs $199. I'm sure if countries or schools buy large quantities the cost per unit goes down.

However the thought of a laptop at a price of $35 is very intriguing!

Think it's all very well having components at $35, but if at that price the goods are likely to be just thrown away once they have been finished with which wont be good for the enviroment.
