Most, but not all CPUs can be successfully overclocked, some more so than others (even those that originated on the same wafer during their manufacture). However, it all depends on whether the motherboard (and in particular the revision of the BIOS that is installed) supports overclocking and, if it is, what the limit is. Note that by overclocking, I am also implying underclocking at the same time. The terms overclocking/underclocking mean to run a CPU or other component at a frequency other than its default.

In order to give you a definitive answer, we need to know the make and full model number (including the build revision) of your motherboard. The BIOS revision you have installed will also be useful.

Hey guys i need help overcloking my core 2 duo e8500 on my MSi G41-p25 mother board i can clock it from 3.16Ghz to 3.24Ghz but then it wont go no more and fails yesterday i managed to get it to 3.25 but for some reason i carnt do it again today i need help because im new to overclocking can somone help me asap please?

If you have a 2500 instead of a 2500k like your spec says, you won;t be able to overclock very much - you need the unlocked 2500k.
