Windows 7 - Ram Timings

Corsair XMS 3 1600Mhz 1.64V-currently vs stock 1.5 at 1066Mhz
haven't touched the timing but it is, (9-9-9-24)
i have heard as you increase the voltage it is a good idea to lower the timing for everything to keep up with the new clock/voltage

also, anyone who has worked with XMS 3, 1.65 is stock, Ram doesn't seem very warm at all (as im using water cooling on the CPU/no hot air onto it and a fan above the ram pushing 100CFM) would it be ok if i increase the voltage to say, 1.7?

RAM is probably the easiest piece of hardware to ruin by trying to OC, or run out of spec.

You might be OK increasing the voltage a bit but ...
I would strongly advise keeping the Voltage at its rated setting, and see what you can do with it within that boundary.


You can lower the timings (or tighten them) but you may also need to lower the clock speeds.

Tighter timings/lower clocks may or may not see a benefit. It will really depend on what you are doing. I would also bet that the only difference you'll see will be numbers in a benchmark. Likely none at all in everyday use.

Yep, for the most part it's more of placebo effect.

Every now and then you'd swear 'some' areas of usage just feel 'snappier', but overall tighter timings do bugger all to perceived difference.

You could always give it a try but with that RAM you'd do well to leave it at 9-9-9 as trying to go lower (8-8-8) may give errors, or system instability.

I have an i7 setup (see system specs) with Corsair's Dominator memory running at 8-8-8-20 @1600MHz @1.64 volts. If I try lowering (tightening) my timings to say 7-7-7 or 7-8-7, my system crashes or won't boot.

Like anything else it depends on the materials used to make the RAM, like a processor, some are better overclockers than others.

If you do overclock, manually set the RAM to stay within parameters. I have my 950 running at 3.8GHz, with my RAM running at 1600MHz no issues.
