Need help to overclock! when i tried to watch movies or play games on my compaq presario cq40 amd turion x2, it just slows down n i cant even play games or watch any movies anymore. half an hour later it just shut down by itself. i believe its overheated. i tried using the amd overdrive but it crashed many times. i dont know how to overclock to be precise. If anyone knows solution to resolve this problem, then please let me know. | My System Specs |

I highly doubt you'll be able to overclock using a Compaq laptop as those options are inaccessible. Not to mention you shouldn't overclock it anyway if it's already overheating; overclocking = higher TDP (waste heat). No, what you should be focusing on is what's causing the overheating and random shut downs, which if I'm to be honest, already sounds like a problem.
Give me some detailed specifics. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Nebula OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit CPU Core i5-3570K - 4.5GHz Motherboard ASUS Sabertooth Z77 [B. 1803] Memory G.Skill Sniper 12GB DDR3-1600 Graphics Card HD6950 CrossfireX Sound Card Asus Xonar DX [Unified drivers] Monitor(s) Displays Gateway FHD2402 Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 Keyboard Gigabyte Osmium, Noppoo Choc Mid 87, Ducky Shine II (soon!) what should i do then? i really dont know whats causing the overheat. it was fine before but now its acting up. tried to play couple of games using very low settings but few mins after playing, it suddenly slows down n shut down by itself. i can hardly play. same thing happened when i was watching movies. i already send my laptop for servicing n all the man said was to change my processor(might as well buy a new desktop) or place it under cool environment. 0.o | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit CPU AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Graphics Card Ati Radeon HD 3450 |

Laptops usually do not have the best cooling in the first place .. AT least not good enough to support OCing, which creates even more heat and stress.
Are the issues the result of an OC attempt, or are you trying to OC to resolve them?
OCing will only cause more headaches and issues, and possibly permanant damage at this point.
I agree with Terrronium 12, find & solve the problems you are having.
One suggestion would be:
Try to clean it out real well, with a can of compressed air. Could be some dust build up. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom (Self Build) OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit CPU Intel Core i7 2700k Motherboard eVGA P67 SLI Memory 8GB Mushkin Redline Ridgebacks @1866 Graphics Card EVGA GTX570 SC Sound Card XiFi Titanium HD Monitor(s) Displays LG W2453V Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Saitek Cyborg PSU Seasonic x750 Case Corsair 600T SE White Cooling eVGA Superclocked CPU Cooler Hard Drives Intel 320 80GB -- Intel X25-V 40GB --WD Black 1TB x2 -- WD Blue 640GB Antivirus Kaspersky Browser IE Other Info LG BD/DVD |

Cleaning, reapplying thermal compound properly (as factories are wont not to do) and getting a cooling base station are your best bets. Have fun, usually the cleaning can take a hour or two, depending on how accessible your innards are. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Zen Productions OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel i7-860 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P Memory Corsair Dominator 1600Mhz, 8-8-8-24 1.65v 2x2GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon 5770 HD Sound Card Intel High Definition Sound Monitor(s) Displays Samsung P2570HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech G110 Mouse Logitech MX Revolution PSU Corsair CMPSU-750HX 750W Case Antec p183 Cooling Corsair H50 Water Cooler Hard Drives Western Digital Caviar Black 500gb Internet Speed 768 mb/s |

Overclocking and laptops do not co exist happily.....Laptops are prone to heat issues and the manuf lock up modify the Bios for the most part to stop users from overclocking anything. You can get aftermarket cooling solutions for laptops but I have no idea where you would start looking for them.
If you want to play games nothing beats a desktop built by yourself...you can modify/upgrade, you can modify the Bios you can do pretty much anything. As ppl above have said, if you can access the insides of your laptop then cleaning/reapplying heatsink paste may help if you have a lotof dust build up and/or you've had the thing a while and need to refesh the thermal paste on your CPU.
If you have applied some sort of O/C via software like MSI afterburner etc then reset it to defaults to eliminate the heat. And then
build a desktop. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number home built OS Windows 7 Professional 64 bit CPU 930 i7 quad O/C 4ghz Motherboard Asus P6X58D premium Memory G Skill 3x2gb O/C to 1603mhz 1T timing Graphics Card EVGA 570 Sound Card creative titanium Monitor(s) Displays samsung s23a950d..120hz 3D Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Razor arcosa Mouse Razer Diamondback PSU Antec Quattro 1000 watt Case Xigmatek Elysium Cooling Custom Loop..Kryos block.360rad..BP comp fittings etc Hard Drives Western Digital 3X150 Velocoraptors in Raid 5 Internet Speed Wireless so w/e I get at the time |
