overclocking and xmp ram help Hi, i have tried a few times to overclock to about 3.4/3.6 but my system seems to be unstable. i did not try to mess with too many settings as i am trying to keep it relatively simple however i think the stumbling block may well be my ram as it is set to xmp in the bios. I have read a few threads on various forums but cant find any that refer to xmp ram and overclocking anyone with any ideas?
Cheers
Raz

What stop code are you getting when you overclock?
One of the codes is from too low of a voltage in your CPU or RAM so you need to bump that up to be stable.

To be honest i cant remember as i have not tried for a while. I just felt like trying again and was hopping that some one had some experience using xmp ram(ram is gskil ddr3 cl7 1.5 or 1.35 volts not sure which as i am not on that pc at the moment) and overclocking a i7 920.
thanks for the tip

You might want to check to see if you RAM is rated to 1.5V or 1.65V, then possibly adjust it to 1.65V if you can/need.

Sorry it's been a while. Voltage according to CPUZ is 1.5 using the xmp configuration. I suppose if i turn xmp off and just try a simple overclock config it may run stable. although that sort of defeats the object of having xmp ram

Turn of the XMP profiles in the Bios if you want to O/C..XMP ram is over rated and with a i7 920 you should be able to hit 3.4 gig standing on your head given they will run faster than that on standard air cooling.
What speed is the Ram? 1600 mhz?
BTW no one I know is O/C and using XMP profiles at all..

Cheers after reading a few forums sort of get the idea that xmp is a bit like using a software overclock. Ok but not quite real.
When I next get a few hours to spare I will give it another go. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number home built PC.
