Windows 7 - 'Overclock'?

'Overclock' while stress testing...

I was running a stress test with Prime95 when I saw my CPU frequency jump to 3.6Ghz! I've never overclocked before nor run a stress test and naturally was suprised to see this happen. Was this just some glitch to do with CPU-Z or did my CPU actually speed up?

Is this the first time you have run Prime95 while watching the CPU speeds? Could be that turbo boost (or whatever) kicked in for a bit more power, or it could be that CPUz glitched (though that seems unlikely) or the motherboard glitched (which would be weird).

Might be worth restarting and trying it again to see if it happens twice.

Could also just be a ghost in the code.

It's the first time I've ever run Prime 95. And I'm not sure that my CPU has a turbo boost, it's that old.

It should have enhanced speed step. No turbo boost though.

Intel® Pentium® Processor E6700 (2M Cache, 3.20 GHz, 1066 FSB)

Easy enough to go into the BIOS and find out for yourself.

Thanks, Aaron. I already went into the BIOS and Speedstep was enabled apparently. CPU can't be overclocked as the highest and default bus:core ratio is 12. I'm still unsure how it could have gone over though. It's more likely to be a CPU-Z error.

Well, try Prime95 again to see if it happens a second time. Being your first time running it, that would explain why you saw something unusual.

Something odd about that CPU snip.

Are you sure the CPU is not overclocked?

The E6700 has a 1066 FSB and x10multi.

The bios should show:
FSB speed 1066
Bus Speed 266.5
Multiplier x10

The math comes out at (for default)
1066FSB / 4 = 266.5 Bus
x10multi x 266.5 - 2.67Ghz core speed.

CPUz is showing its OCd. Both the Bus speed and CPU Multi have been increased.
But I thought the E6700 had a locked multi? You can go down, but not up.

From this guide...

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and E6700 Overclocking - TechSpot Reviews

"Therefore, I believe it is safe to say anyone purchasing a Core 2 Duo E6700 processor can expect to hit at least 3.50~3.66GHz when overclocking"

Thank you all for the help. I'm not worried about what happened, just curious as to why it did. Thanks again.
