Windows 7: Intel Q6600 and OCZ DDR2 Platinum 2x2GB

Hello as said in the title i have a intel Q6600 (revision G0 running at 2.8 GHz, multiplier x9.0, buss speed 311.0 MHz, Rated FSB 1244 MHz at 1.28 V) and a gigabyte ep45-ds3l motherboard and 2x2GB ocz platinum PC2-6400(400MHz) , (DRAM 466.5 MHz, 2:3, 5-5-5-18, tRFC 46, CR 2T at 1.9 V).
I wish to get the most out of my system cpu at 3.0 GHz at least and rams to 1066 MHz.
All the temps are running stable the cpu has a good cooler and fresh thermal paste runing around 37 C easy when under load not much higher around 45.
I am a newbie at clocking so i would really aprichiate if someone would help me

i think youtubing "how to overclock" would be your best bet. its better to be shown than to be told.

start of by changing the multiplyer, basically change it buy .5 or 1 and boot, then run prime 95, if its stable try again, keep doing it until the system hangs or blue screens, then try upping the voltage a tiny amount, that may make it run at the same speed as it did before when it bsod. also adjusting the front side bus will allow different combinations and smaller increases.
thatw ill also oc the ram, but also increasing ram voltage will oc it.
that is a vastly over simplified way.. but its an answer lol

some motherboards have built in oc facilities. just tick a box in the bios and it overclocks it. mine pushed my core i5 to 4.2ghz and was stable.

So if i watend to oc both i would first need to oc the ram and then when that is stable then the cpu?
Can i get my rams to 1066 MHz?
I've been lost a bit with them ram multiplicator its got a number like 2.00,3.00.2.30 and letters a,b,c,d each having its own frequency could you explain how to set up that please? Do i do that before raising the voltage?
I've read somewhere that my rams are fine on 2.1 V. Im just interested because not in a lot of guides people explain which thing you should do first, thank you for your anwser and help.

2.1v is very high! but yours is ddr2 and all knowledge has been lost in my head with ddr3 lol.

Changing your front side bus will overclock your ram. but to be honest if its for gaming, you wont see any increase in performace from overclocking your ram, it will just make desktop jobs that bit more snappy. so aiming to do so will be a bit pointless.

you wont overclock 400mhz ram to 1066mhz, thats asking to much. and with the cost of ram you can get 1066mhz for about £25 per 2gb.

2.1 V is written on their page stock is 1.8V but they say 2.1V on their page.
No i think i've expressed myself wrong the dram frequency is 466.5MHz times 2 is 933 MHz i want it to reach a 1066 MHz thats a couple of MHz up

oh yeah sorry duh.. dual channel PC2-6400.. is 800mhz lol sorry its been a long day!

in that case i used to have that ram and that cpu and got 1066mhz and 3,2ghz from cpu with little effort.

do you have an aftermarket cpu cooler? as not advised to oc with stock cooler.

You Overclock the CPU, with the RAM as slow as possible.
To start, just set the RAM at DDR 667mhz, and 5-5-5-15 timings. This way, when you BSOD, or get errors, you know its not RAM, and the CPU is to blame.

Try to find a stable clock on the CPU 1st.
Then, once its stable you can start working with RAM.



I would advise against OCing RAM. Although some can be OCd to a degree, going from 800 --> 1066 is quite a reach for most DDR2 800 rated RAM.
Although some can, RAM is by far the easiest component to fry when over-volted or overclocked.


What I would do is try to get a good OC on the CPU.
The set the RAM to run as close to its rated speed as possible, if its not already there when the CPU is OCd.
You will not really gain anything (in terms of Gaming) from 800->1066 RAM.
Not that youll notice anyway, and would really only see it in a benchmark.
