Windows 7: Overclocking system AND graphic card

Hi,

Just a simple question,

Q. Is it safe/stable to overclock system and in addition to that also overclock graphic card.? How to be sure for stability. previous Gr. Card HD 4350 died I suspect because I did little overclocking in system ( as now) and then in graphic card was on AUto Tune, overdrice. Graphic card showed erratic behaviour after couple of hours completely died.


My system specs briefly:

ASUS P5QPL PRO Q9400 2GB CORSAIR DDR2 Dual Channel.
Graphic card: SAPPHIRE RADEON HD 6850 GDDR5 1GB.

I have done little overclocking on system, some initial steps only. then in catalyst it is set to :
Enable Graphic overdrive. 775 MHZ for GPU and 1GHz for GDDR5. these values I got through Auto Tune.



FSB locked to 100, DDR2 little overclocked.

over clocking is safe, if done properly, and its only as stable as you make it.

You need a good quality power supply to overclock effectively, as a cheap unbranded or bundled one may not give you the fine adjustment that you need, and or the consistent voltages needed.

IF you have a locked multiplier, you can only increase your fsb to gain performance, this in tern will overclock your ram.

overclocking a graphics card doesnt often offer a huge amount of performance gain, its not a case of a game not playing, and then after overclocking it does with great graphics. in reality you only will see around 5-10fps gain, if any at all.

My main concern is
I overclocked FSB (and RAM ) little steps only, it is stable.
Then I am also overclocking GRAPHIC card using Catalyst Overdrive set to Auto.

Now if there is any harm or danger in overclocking both , the system and Gr. card at the same time.

because I did the same earlier and my graphic card died. This time I am using ATI 6850 which is expensive.

If there is danger in it, please mention so I will remove overclocking on required items .
I do'nt want to waste my new Gr. Card

That's the very nature of overclocking, you increase in small amounts until you reach instability, and then you look at increasing the cpu's voltage a small amount in an effort to bring stability back.

The downside to overclocking is the increased head the components create, if you don't have a decent CPU heatsink and ample case cooling you run the risk of over heating.

Why are you looking to overclock? If its to get games to run that currently don't, then your best of saving for more ram and a new GPU, if its just a hobby then by all means try.

My personal opinion is that when you get to the stage where your computer can no longer fo what you want its time to build a new one. However I love building new pc's so I do it as frequently as possible lol.
