How Many Case Fans? Hey there! Building a new build PC and was just wondering how many case fans people would recommend for it. The hardware and case is as follows, - Asus M5A78L/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard
- AMD 960T Black Edition 3.0GHz Socket AM3 Processor
- XFX HD 5450 Heatsink 1GB DDR3 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E
- Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V unbuffered
- WD 500GB 3.5" SATA 6Gb/s Caviar Blue Hard Drive - 7200RPM 16MB Cach
- Samsung Optical Drive
and the case is a Coolermaster Elite 330 with 500w PSU .. and the case has one rear case fan which I think is 120mm.
Thanks for your input in advance!

well that's really up to you. how many can your case hold? more fans can keep it cooler and help keeps dust out if you position them properly. However it also equals more noise, unless you get some silent fans. i have 5 fans on mine, i can add 2 more tho. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number The Vampire OS Windows 7 Ultimate CPU Intel i5 2500k @ 3.30 Motherboard P8Z68 V-Pro Memory G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 2x4 Gb Graphics Card BFG GTX 260 MAXCORE 55 OC 896MB GDDR3 Sound Card Onboard Monitor(s) Displays 50'' Sony Display Panel Screen Resolution 1360 x 768 Keyboard LX710 Logitech Wireless Keyboard Mouse Logitech Wireless Mouse PSU OCZ 750 Watts ZT Series Fully Modular PSU 80 Plus Bronze Case NZXT Red Phantom Cooling 120mm x2 Intake, 120mm x 1 and 200mm x2 Exhaust Hard Drives Seagate 750 GB

hi adamguk, and welcome to sevenforums.
it depends.
i've only got two in my case (which isn't fancy by any means) rear 120mm and top 140mm, both turned down to minimum rpm. they keep my rig perfectly cool even through mammoth overclocked gaming sessions.
i'm not a big fan of fan noise. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number mickey megabyte 1234 OS ultimate 64 sp1 CPU i5 2500K 3.3@4.2GHz Motherboard MSI P67A-GD53 Memory 8 gigs GSkill Ripjaws 1600 Graphics Card amd hd6950 Sound Card creative x-fi gamer Monitor(s) Displays samsung 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard saitek eclipse ii Mouse logitech g3 PSU antec 550 Case antec three hundred Cooling i'm a cooling fan Hard Drives ocz vertex 2e 60 gig, samsung f3 1tb, buffalo 2tb ext Internet Speed about 4 Mbps Other Info i love win7 |

I think it depends also on the ambient temperature your system runs in. In the UK you may be in a better situation than me but I think an intake fan blowing over your spinning HDDs is a good idea. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Own build (+ Recased Acer Aspire x1800) OS Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1 x 2 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Memory G.Skill Ripjaws (DDR3-1600) 2x4GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTS 450; Intel HD Graphics 3000(GT2+) Monitor(s) Displays Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel U2311H, Samsung SyncMaster P2350 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK520 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK520 PSU Seasonic M12II 520W Case Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 Cooling Case: 1x120mm, 3x140mm CPU: Hyper 212+ Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB (000F), Seagates 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS + Internet Speed 6-7 Mbps Antivirus Norton NIS, Malwarebytes on 2 (MSE on 3rd PC) Browser FireFox Other Info Audio: Logitech Z523 2.1 |

I have 10 case fans and 3 on my CPU. It's only because I have 2x UK-3000s running full speed that I can hear it. When I turn them off, it's virtually silent. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number tw33k OS Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) SP1 CPU Intel 3770k 4.6GHz Motherboard ASUS Maximus V Formula Memory 8GB (2x 4GB) Crucial Ballistix Graphics Card Sapphire 7950 (1060/1600) Sound Card On Board Realtek HD Audio Monitor(s) Displays 27" Acer B273HU (via HDMI) Screen Resolution 2048 x 1152 Keyboard Microsoft Wireless 5000 Mouse Microsoft Wireless 5000 PSU Corsair AX750 Gold Case Corsair Obsidian 800DW Cooling Corsair H100 (2x AP-121/2x UK-3000 push/pull) Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB

Add the optional 120mm fan to the front as an intake and make sure the rear fan is positioned to exhaust. The rest depend on your CPU heatsink.
Personally, I think those fancy hard drive coolers (the kind that are mounted directly to the drive) are worthless. Good airflow over the drive (that's where the intake fan comes into play) is what you want.

i got 5 fans in my case and it runs cool and not to loud. Your case doesn't appear to leave you a ton of options, unless you're handy with a hole saw:
You could probably get away with a side intake fan too - even if you have to blu-tack/masking tape it into place.
But adding the front 120mm is imperative.
As long as the core components (CPU, GPU) and to a lesser extent HDD's and ambient are within the limits, it's fine - more isn't always better.
(My personal max was 13 case fans in a HAF 932. My current Lian Li has 4 and overall, there is SFA difference in temp difference between 13 and 4 fans ) | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Systems by SmartEyeball OS 8 Pro x64 CPU i7 3770K 4.6GHz Motherboard ASUS P8Z77 WS Memory 16GB G.Skill Trident X 2400mhz Graphics Card 3x Gigabyte GTX 670 OC WindForce *TRI SLI* Sound Card ALC898 / 5.1 receiver/ ATH-AD900 Headphones Monitor(s) Displays x3 Dell U2410 / 58" Samsung / "40 Sony Screen Resolution 5760*1200/ 1920*1200 / 1920*1080 Keyboard Topre Realforce // Ducky Shine MX Black // Filco Ninja TKL Mouse Razer Imperator + Thermaltake Theron PSU Corsair AX1200W Case Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Edition Cooling Noctua NH-D14 Hard Drives 2x Intel 520 240GB (RAID 0) * 2x WD Caviar Blacks 2TB (RAID 0) * 2TB WD Caviar Black Antivirus MSE Browser IE, FF Other Info GT Extreme V2 Sim Racing Cockpit + 40" LCD and K/B Mouse stand ▼

why do people need so many fans? just how hot does your case get?
if i were to put my mobo in the oven, i may need five, ten, thirteen fans to keep it cool, but i don't.
maybe too many fans start to cancel each other out? i like quiet pc's, me.
or maybe i'm lucky, and the fact that my psu sits in the bottom of my case really helps air flow a lot, allowing me to run cool with just two fans, even though i overclock and play games? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number mickey megabyte 1234 OS ultimate 64 sp1 CPU i5 2500K 3.3@4.2GHz Motherboard MSI P67A-GD53 Memory 8 gigs GSkill Ripjaws 1600 Graphics Card amd hd6950 Sound Card creative x-fi gamer Monitor(s) Displays samsung 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard saitek eclipse ii Mouse logitech g3 PSU antec 550 Case antec three hundred Cooling i'm a cooling fan Hard Drives ocz vertex 2e 60 gig, samsung f3 1tb, buffalo 2tb ext Internet Speed about 4 Mbps Other Info i love win7 How Many Case Fans? problems?
