    Need help to overclock!

when i tried to watch movies or play games on my compaq presario cq40 amd turion x2, it just slows down n i cant even play games or watch any movies anymore. half an hour later it just shut down by itself. i believe its overheated. i tried using the amd overdrive but it crashed many times. i dont know how to overclock to be precise. If anyone knows solution to resolve this problem, then please let me know.

I highly doubt you'll be able to overclock using a Compaq laptop as those options are inaccessible. Not to mention you shouldn't overclock it anyway if it's already overheating; overclocking = higher TDP (waste heat). No, what you should be focusing on is what's causing the overheating and random shut downs, which if I'm to be honest, already sounds like a problem.

    Give me some detailed specifics.

what should i do then? i really dont know whats causing the overheat. it was fine before but now its acting up. tried to play couple of games using very low settings but few mins after playing, it suddenly slows down n shut down by itself. i can hardly play. same thing happened when i was watching movies. i already send my laptop for servicing n all the man said was to change my processor(might as well buy a new desktop) or place it under cool environment. 0.o

Laptops usually do not have the best cooling in the first place .. AT least not good enough to support OCing, which creates even more heat and stress.

Are the issues the result of an OC attempt, or are you trying to OC to resolve them?

OCing will only cause more headaches and issues, and possibly permanant damage at this point.

I agree with Terrronium 12, find & solve the problems you are having.

    One suggestion would be:
Try to clean it out real well, with a can of compressed air. Could be some dust build up.

Cleaning, reapplying thermal compound properly (as factories are wont not to do) and getting a cooling base station are your best bets. Have fun, usually the cleaning can take a hour or two, depending on how accessible your innards are.

Overclocking and laptops do not co exist happily.....Laptops are prone to heat issues and the manuf lock up modify the Bios for the most part to stop users from overclocking anything. You can get aftermarket cooling solutions for laptops but I have no idea where you would start looking for them.

If you want to play games nothing beats a desktop built by yourself...you can modify/upgrade, you can modify the Bios you can do pretty much anything. As ppl above have said, if you can access the insides of your laptop then cleaning/reapplying heatsink paste may help if you have a lotof dust build up and/or you've had the thing a while and need to refesh the thermal paste on your CPU.

If you have applied some sort of O/C via software like MSI afterburner etc then reset it to defaults to eliminate the heat. And then

    build a desktop.

Please read the following sorrowful message with killing yourself.
Can anyone guide me please, perhaps remotely assist me in order to speed up my old and only one laptop.
I have never been able to set the performance settings for best appearance. This computer was a gift and it has always been set to improve program performance. I only ungraded the ram the its maximum after extensive research three years ago. My girlffriend cannot work and I cannot afford to buy me a pair of pants since more than a year ago. I usually google this type of stuff but I saw that I could belong to a group like this better idea.

Besides, I am already goggle-ing weird things like (speed up Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2370 @ 1.73GHz, speed up TOSHIBA MK1637GSX ATA, speed up ddr pc2-5300, install flash.ocx, install wiflax)...and looking for a job too as a matter of fact to make some more.

HELP. I would like to know if I can improve my laptop performance or overclock something here. I usually stop bonjour service and any process consuming my memory or network connection speed. Pura Vida. I would be at peace with some improvements to make this beloved brick more personal with visual effects set for best appeareance. BTW I dont have heat problems and I have a cooling station just in case firework want to arise. :)
