Hi John, I think most people would say to stay away from any SSD with a Sandforce controller, Samsung, OCZ, etc. The Crucial M4s are really nice, JMicron contollers.

Thanks Gary was looking at OCZ and had read the Sandforce controller was the best in the business.

I just have to go searching for the Crucials - the Jmicron they anything to do with Micron as they produce the Crucials?

Yessir, JMicron make the Crucial drives and the controller. The newer Sandforce SSDs may be doing better now, no one reporting bad things here at the moment I don't think.

Another vote for the SSD.

Since you mentioned gaming, perhaps a video card upgrade as well?

The best upgrade you can do is a SSD.

Going from your current setup to the one you posted won't give much of an increase in performance.

Just saw that the Crucial M4 has a problem with BSoDs after 5000 hours, Crucial said they know what the problem is and are going to put out a firmware update in the next couple of weeks.
This is something to watch but, the M4 is still at the top of my next SSD list.

@Britton30, Samsung makes their own controller.
This is a good SSD also.

I would agree to stay away from OCZ, their issues may be resolved but, the way they handle things and their support leave a lot to be desired.

Ok I have had a shop around - not much in price differences and I think I might go the Corsair Corsair Force Series GT 120GB SSD [CSSD-F120GBGT-BK] - $229.00 : PC Case Gear or

Crucial M4 SSD 128GB [CT128M4SSD2] - $239.00 : PC Case Gear (Crucial) as both are 6Gbs not that that makes much difference I suppose for what I do.

The red Corsair is only (huh only) about $35 more than a 90GB Corsair, and a 120 is probably going to hold most of my stuff and I'll clone it for safety's sake.

Thanks to all - great bunch of fellows as always

I would stay away from the Corsair Force Series GT 120GB SSD, it uses a SandForce controller (SF-2281) and Corsair SSDs have been having BSoD issues with their firmware.
Last time I checked, it has been a long time and they haven't fixed it yet.

I would go with the Crucial M4.

Ok Dave cos Gary and most of you other gurus are also saying that Crucial is the best so might go for this one bit more expensive but cheaper in the long run I guess if I am to avoid problems.

I have that exact drive (and the 64GB version in my laptop). Firmware issues notwithstanding, it's a great drive.

Can I install Icon Packs designed for Build 7600 to Build 7601? An Icon Pack was saying install on to 7600 only and after I checked my regedit, I learned that I have 7601 (Probably SP1, I don't know). Would I have any problems if I install the icon pack? Thanks.
