I have the QPI to auto.

Yes. For some reason 4GHz runs stable with a 21 multiplier in everything, but then it gets too hot because of the voltage: 80+ degrees
And with a 19 multiplier 4GHz runs stable with lower voltage, but then I get these game crashes after 20 minutes.
If you're going to OC to 4gig you need to manually set the QPI/Vtt voltage. Voltages that should be set manually are Vcore, QPI/Vtt, RAM.

For my 3.5 OC I have a QPI/Vtt of 1.215. However visiting Tweaktown's GIGABYTE forum for example, most users have a QPI/Vtt of 1.3 - 1.315 for 4gig+ OC's. It could be less (if you're lucky) but it's mostly around the 1.3 mark.

You might want to visit your MB's forums, or other overclocking forums to get some good ideas on voltages.

    Good luck.

Just curious. Are you talking about CPU temperatures or CPU core temperatures? If you are referring to 80+ core temperatures under stress, you are close to the upper limits. If you are referring to the CPU temperature you are clearly in the danger zone.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say those are core temps. Of couse a screen shot would help clear the mystery as well :)

Core temps yes. But at my current OC @ 3.85GHz I only need 1.235Vcore, so I'm happy with that, and the core temps never go over 65. I'm trying to keep temps under 70 at stress.

I haven't really gotten that into overclocking, just started OC'ing a couple of weeks ago, so haven't tried to manually set the QPI yet.

You might want to do yourself, and equipment, a favor by looking into some overclocking fourms for tips.

Even though this one is in reference to a Gigabyte board, it does a good job of explaining the basics. Someting you need to heed. Adrian Cantrill's Blog » Overclocking – Core i7 930 & Gigabyte X58A-UD5

Here's another overclocker's fourm - Overclockers Forums - The Performance Computing Community

You can also always Google your board's fourms as well.

    Good luck.

More good advice for overclocking, good links.

Read as much as you can.

Understanding QPI will help your OC and temps immensely.

Since you guys are discussing Cpu & Core temps..

The Cpu temp vs the Cores temps: My Cpu temp is always about 5*c less than the temps for the four cores. The Cpu temp is taken from under the socket, and core temps from on-die right? (For AM3)

But more importantly, why is it that it matters, what's the difference, why does it matter?

Again, just because it's being discussed, I want to pick at your brains for info.
