Thanks guy's... I may be a rookie to playing this interesting game of OC'ing but I'm no rookie to computers and their technical side. I have been an electronics engineer for 30 years. I was one of the original field engineers that developed the guidance system for the Cruise Missile program and worked many MANY years for the feds in the cryptographic field. I LOVE reading technical stuff BUT since my accident, all I can do is play at home with them now. LOL

So, then your recommendation would be that for a stable day to day system the range of 4.2 / 4.3 would be the top end with consistent temps below 60c. Would that be correct? I have another rig that I am slowly putting back together that I am thinking about using JUST for OC'ing, that way I don't have to keep jumping back and forth with my settings for work.

I've always figured that since the Z77MA-G45 is so limited with its window for adjusting VCore and lack of offset controls that finding a NORMAL operational 3570k CPU that would operate within the 4.4 - 4.5 range for day to day usage might not be feasible. I think I said before that, without being able to get the CPU voltage of this Mobo up to the neighborhood of 1.3vdc +, I couldn't see this setup attaining the high speeds that you got to play with. None the less, I have had one heck of a blast playing with all of this. I have learned the hard way with my last rig that lack of cooling and high temps do indeed KILL. That's how I smoked my previous i7-860 system.

The "Old Girl" as I have called her Doug, died a horrible death and all that was left of her is the case that I am currently using. But it doesn't allow for good enough air flow so I will start looking for a couple of cases and a better cooling system. The current air system that I am using if phenomenal for stock air cooling in a mATX case because of it's offset design but with the super fast rise in temps with this chip, she be lacking big time. And a new PSU would be in order to since my 5vdc rail is running a little low (borderline out of tolerance). I hate it when my wife yells at me down the hallway "Are you cooking something in there again"?

You guys are super and I am looking forward to many future OC'ing adventures!

Wow! I bet that was interesting! We get so many people with really interesting backgrounds come through here - we had (he's now banned) a member a few months ago who worked on the software on the Mars rover.

Bill, I agree with Tom. Sounds like you have a very interesting background. As far as overclocking, All of the Z77 boards were made for overclocking. Some do have more options than others, but most all of them have the basic settings to do it, some just have different terminology and methods. If you have proper cooling, most boards have the ability to run 24/7 at 4.5-4.6. Those speeds are pretty easy for these chips. But, I would recommend you get a good PSU and good cooling before you try it. A good quality PSU is a must. A bad one can take out your whole system, so never skimp on a PSU. And a good cooler is a must for these chips as they do get quite hot while stress testing. But, the numbers I saw on your CPU seems like it is a very good one. I really know nothing about MSI boards. I had one once and it turned into a paperweight and now resides in the dump. But, we have several members with MSI boards who have achieved some pretty good pverclocks from them.

Hey Bill, nice to meet ya. Sounds like you've got a pretty good little CPU there. Truthfully, as powerful as the 3570K is, it doesn't even need to be overclocked to be a great performer.......but I know it's easy to do so why not? Anything 4.0GHz and up is a great 24/7 frequency as long as the voltage is something you are comfortable with and the temps aren't out of line. I might have missed this, but have you posted any screenshots of CPU-Z or Core Temp? If not, I'd be interested in seeing them. There is a vast amount of knowledge here, and some very solid guys and gals, so if you have any questions, just ask. Again, welcome aboard!

    Kelly

Also, watch out for a fella named Paul that hangs around these parts.......he'll start a few threads, make a leaderboard or two and you'll be OC'ing and tweaking everything you can get your hands on! LOL

Ah yeah, guess I just looked right over that. Long day at work. There's another one to add to the pile of IB chips that can run a healthy OC on freakin almost no extra voltage lol. If I had a Microcenter within 100 miles of me, I'd try to snatch me up another one. Guess I'm stuck with this one lol.
