Bungee, to answer your question, it is possible that the PSU was choking. Just looking at the case, it looks like it is sitting flat on the table. The PSU has no place to pull air from. Put some legs or castors under it and try it again. It needs some way to draw outside air in. You can buy magnetic filters that will attach to the bottom, so it does not draw dust inside the PSU. With it up like that, it is pulling in warm air from inside the case attempting to cool itself, plus there is too good an opportunity of dropping a screw or something inside it. Then you will have problems. Just my .02 cents. But, there are a lot of people who install them fan up, so you have to decide that one for yourself.
essenbe, linnemeyer, you were absolutely right about the feet for my case. The very short cheap ones that came with the case (cheap case) weren't enough. Now I can barely hear the PSU fan at idle and it is actually quite quiet under load.
I replaced the original feet with some proper ones which were on a turntable I had in storage. They can also be adjusted in height so, if needed, I can rise the thing an additional 3/4".

    Thanks for your advise.

Wishmaster, I bet you can overclock the crap out of that, if you really need to. The last thing I saw that was close to that was an IBM 360, but it is missing the 16" tape reels. There I go telling my age again.
Or the 24" magnetic disk HDD with a big 16K capacity.

Remember this in regards to RAM limit?

"640K ought to be enough for anybody."

If you think about it its quite amazing how far computers, or technology in general, has progressed in a relatively short period of time.

    Cheers Tommy
I'm going to have to spend some time showing her stuff now as all she's ever done with her laptop is mooch the net. Apart from at school so she has lots to learn. She loves learning and has always loved school so it can only benefit her enit.
I was the same when i was younger, I loved to learn things but i hated school. Not enough Practical stuff so they could'nt keep me interested. Then i spent most of my high school years in n out of hospital so it all went downhill from there lol.
