I'm really not sure. It has never bothered me. I just assumed if they put it there, you were supposed to use it. Not so, according to Asus. Assuming they know what they are talking about. I only connected the 8 pin and have had no problems so far.

Well just to add my 2cents, I had majour problems when I tried to overclock my cpu, untill I plugged in the extra 4pin, I didnt think it would be nesasarry cause it allready had a 8pin in, but it worked and overclocking isue solved. So I dont know why, all i can think of is rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. But for temps etc I dont think it matters

+1 for the 4pin eps not being needed on the V Formula, Its just for stability at higher cpu oc's. I bought the Ax 850 because it had the extra eps connector but to use it meant i would only be able to run 1 gpu. The extra eps use's one of the Pcie output connectors
As others have said, it's not a must to use it but it helps.

Were the standards not developed when CPU's were 150w, like P4's, and many, if not most are now 100w. I believe the 4 pin was actually for the 150w, no? In any case, I think the leads all combine to the same path, and are from the same rail of the PSU. Discuss

I'll go along with that Bill. On many boards. like mine, which have a single 8-pin Extended Power Supply (EPS) plug, the instructions say one may use only a 4-pin connector.

Core temp will. I have mine set that way. But, is your max temp T Case or TJ Max? TCase is the temp in the center of the CPU that no software I know of can read. TJ Max is the Temp Junction. The temp of the cores, that's what software reads. TJ Max usually has a higher max than TCase. Core temp will tell you what it is.

EDIT: as an example, I believe my 3770K has a Tcase Max of 72°C but TJ Max is 105°C
I haven't the foggiest notion which it is. I had fun just finding the figure I did find.

I'll check out Core temp. Thanks!
I've got Core Temp up and running on my machine and, other than all the crapware it both tries to install and actually installs (which I promptly got rid of), it's exactly what I wanted (and it has pretty colors)! Thanks again! I'd rep you but the forum says I have to spread some around elsewhere first.

    This is my understanding
Safe CPU Temperatures? running from 9C-24C is it too cold?
I have some reference buried somewhere. I have found it interesting that Intel seem to give Tcase (& power) as their spec limits.
I have personally found that Open Hardware Monitor is a good tool and it appears their temp readings are:
    1) under my Nuvoton NCT6776F CPU Core Temp it gives the Tcase
    2) under my Intel Core i7-2600K CPU Core Temps it gives Tcore

As a rule of thumb I think Tcore ~= Tcase +10c. I also think most of the temperatature monitor programs estimate Tcore. So in summary if the Tcore reading is near Tcase|max+10c then things are too hot.

My 2600k overclocked to 4.3G may nudge 65c Tcore but hovers around 55c Tcase and is well under the Tcase|max of 72.6c.

    I stand to be corrected.

The Tcase max on mine is 72.6C, while TJmax is 101C. Tcase can't be read as I take it, it is the temp in the center of the Integrated Heat Sink (IHS).

Re: second EPS connector. My P9X79 WS has the 8 pin EPS connector and also a 4 pin Molex connector insted of the usual 4 pin connector. According to the manual (yes, I actually read those things), it's for when more power is needed when running three or more graphics card. I didn't know that it was optional since I'm going to be running only one GPU card until after I got the board so I had a Molex cable and connector ready before the MOBO arrived.

I guess we agree. The best measure of heat damage to PN junctions is Tcore and definitely Tjunction.
So Intel why is Tcase a useful measure in practical situations since it is generally estimated?
