Install another ATX PSu smaller power

    Hello guys,

The PSU of Fujitsu workstation failed. The PSu was 700 W and a bit unusual dimensions. I have another PSU classical ATX, but 500W power and think it would be suitable because I cannot imagine what draws power, because there is only one SATA HDD and Intel Xeon W3520 CPU.
The motherboard is D2778 and as can be seen in the manual there are two connectors, standard 24 pin for Mobo supply and a bit unusual 8 pin connector for the CPU and Nvidia graphics card 1 GB RAM. This new PSU doesn't have this 8 pin connector, but it has two 4 pins connects that can fit. I know this is OK, because voltage pins come to right places.
Now the part that worries me is that 700 W, because it is written in the manual also. All power together on the mobo devices is far less than 500W, so it should work.

Is there something I need to pay attention to before switching ON?

    Thank you!

Power Budget for computer will include CPU + PCIe peripherals (including Graphics card) + SATA peripherals (including HDDs + CD-ROM) + RAM + Motherboard. Your CPU typically takes 100W, but do you know how much power the graphics card takes? Some graphics cards can use up to 200W. So, the power used by the graphics card is an important factor when calculating the overall power budget.

Secondly, a generic power supply will be more efficient at around half of total power. So, it is not typical to load such a supply to maximum capacity. Only certified power supplies can do better than that.

If the Workstation PSU that was supplied with the computer is an unusual shape, then it is possibly a 1 U or 2 U Server Power Supply.

A 4 pin + 4 pin Power connector is equivalent to a 8 pin connector. As your manual explains, the reason why an 8 pin connector is required, is because the peripherals are on separate 12V rails to the motherboard power connections.
