    Main way to prevent it from happening is to make sure that the computer has been running before removing the heatsink, that way the thermal paste/pad is warm and more pliable.

    That's happened to me, AMD AM3 socket. An old Dell. I was trying to flip the heat shroud back. The heat sink with the CPU stuck to it went with it. I had to straighten out a few pins along one edge of the CPU but I got it all working again. The old thermal past was like glue. I had to use a small screw driver to separate the CPU from the heat sink.
