I gave the cooler one more shot. Re-installed it and the computer would not even boot looks like I will stick with the stock for now

Doug, did you reset your motherboard to factory defaults at any time? I'd try that, put a fresh bit of thermal paste on and try your aftermarket cooler again. Unless something in the mounting hardware is broke, I doubt the factory Intel cooler does better than ANY aftermarket cooler.

Yes I did Kelly, reset to default and re did the paste. I'm really baffled by it.

When you have the cooler mounted fully, does it seem pretty tight, or is there some wobble to it?

Too tight can sometimes warp the board and the CPU loses contact...or something like that.

That may be what I did Gary. It was snug, I didn't over tighten it, it would flex if I grabbed it, but not the cooler itself the MB has some give

Finger tight with about 1/8 of a turn is more than enough for that. I don't know what's going on with it Doug......it's got me thoroughly cornfused.

Exactly how I feel. It makes no sense, but when it's the cooler master is in I get worse temps than the stock. I even took my motherboard out a few times, making sure I had the cooler just right. At this point I'm done with it. I have it on the stock fan @4.5 and it's stable. I'll leave it alone until I get a liquid cooler.

Odd Doug, a stock Intel cooler has a hard time cooling an ice cube.
