Windows 7: Dell laptop parts

Dell laptop parts

I have a old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, base line model. The fan was dieing so I ordwered a new fan, then discovered I needed to completely disassemble the machine OK, I'll get a faster CPU and more memory. Everything went well EXCEPT the plastic clips for the zero insertion force sockets, two of the clips broke. Can't find replacements. Looked at buying a "parts" 1525 off evil bay, spendy. I don't want to spend $50-80+ for two plastic clips. I already have the upgrade 2.4ghz cpu and 4 megs of memory, a new fan.

Do I keep dumping $$ in a old laptop? I think I could get $100 + selling it on evil bay for parts, cosmically it's like new.. Put that $$ toward a new laptop with Windoz 8?

Anyone have a idea on dealing with the broken zif clips without spending $$$.

Sadly the zif clips are part of the motherboard and not available as a separate item.

I'm watching a few 1525's on evil bay and if I can get one at a reasonable price I well go that route. With the moon in the right phase I may even be successful at removing the zif clips and installing them in my 1525. I do not like working on lap tops, everything is so damn small, being blind in one eye and I can't see out of the other eye makes it difficult.

I talked to a guy who specializes in these and he told me he makes zif clips with card stock. Building up two or three layers to make a wedge shape insert. I may give that a try. Sounds tedious.

Too bad. Keep an eye out and you may come across a trashed board with good zif clips.

Thanks for the link maxie. I opened the lap top yesterday and made two wedges from the clear plastic hardshell from a fan I had bought. To my amazement it worked. The old Dell booted, complained about too much memory and too fast a cpu. Reset the bios and it is running much faster than it ever has. Going from a 1.6ghz gpu and 2 megs too a 2.4ghz cpu and 4 megs sure makes a difference. Total cost of $40 and hours of grief about those damn little zif clips.

A friend gave my a Vista Ultimate 64, but no CoA, I have Vista Home Basic on it now. Now that I have some Windows 7 time the Vista feels better. I was tiring to run it like XP, I know better now.

I'm at my desk with three machines running, Windows 7-64, Vista HB and XP Pro. I'm in Windows heaven. Now to find a CoA for that Vista 64 disc.
