    So I finally started to OC the CPU, some simple questions.


    I have exact specs of my PC so I don't think I need to list them in the post but anyway. Last night was a test run. A very small OC. First I should say I have my ram timing and ram voltage on manual. My ram handles 1.50V so that's what it's set to. But anyway, onto the questions. My CPU normally runs at 3.3 since its AMD fx-6100 (16.5 x 201). For the OC I disabled CPU smart fan control, raised the multiplier to 18 and set the Vcore to be raised by .150V. My Vcore options are limited, above the .150V there is .175V, that's as high as it goes, but since it was only a minimal OC I didn't want to risk .175V. I F10 and rebooted. Everything ran fine, ran Prime 95 for quite a while and my temps stayed around the same when maxed with prime 95 when it isn't OCed. I have a loop water cooler and my ambiet room temp is 55-60F tops. My question is, is it necessary to turn off Smart fan control? My rig was much louder than normal due to the dual 120mm radiator fans going on full nonstop. Only reason I am asking is because I am using a loop water system and not air. Any input is appreciated. Oh, and I ran windows WEI and I got a 1 point increase from 7.3 to 7.4 on the processor. I forgot to mention I was controlling the CPU voltage via cpuid and it was staying around 1.32~1.4 during testing.

    One more question pertains to CPUID, I included a pic of it (without an OC), as you can see under *Multiplier it says 7-19.5* but today I would like to OC to 4ghz so (20x201) with a Vcore setting of + 0.175V, this is on a Gigabyte mobo. Why does CPUID claim the highest is 19.5 when I know that my FX-6100 can go so much higher? I am sorry if I got any terminology wrong but I think my first test was successful. I know the cpu does not run on +0.50V but rather it raises it that much.

    My question is, is it necessary to turn off Smart fan control? My rig was much louder than normal due to the dual 120mm radiator fans going on full nonstop. Only reason I am asking is because I am using a loop water system and not air.
    Do you have software that controls the water pump? I have Corsair Link and it runs the rad fans. You have a choice of four different profiles to run. I'm not familiar with what's available for stand alone pumps.

    In normal operation my rad fans run 7-800 rpm, they well ramp up as cpu temps increase from gaming or benchmarking.

    I have a Thermaltake Water 2.0 PRO, it does not have any software. With CPU smart fan control turned on, it controls the fan speed as needed. If I turn it off, the fans go 100% nonstop. Now my question is, if I overclock, should I leave Smart CPU fan control On or Off. As it does seem to rev up the fans when the cpu gets hot under non-OC conditions. My cpu fans are also around 800rpm in normal conditions but can go up to 1400 or so If I recall correctly.

    I would leave the smart fan control on until you can consider some higher quality fans later like Noctua's then they can run like mine wide open all the time.

    Another thumbs up for Noctua's, very quiet at high speeds. Get the "P" series for the radiator. I also would leave the CPU smart fan control turned on.

    So I ran my second OC just now. I upped the ante to 4ghz. My results were somewhat suprising to be honest. I expected a point or 2 increase in the CPU WEI score, but it stayed the same, 7.4, but my memory score went from 7.7 to 7.8. And when I run winsat mem, my scores are now well above 20mbs. I attached a pic. To be honest I am scared to leave my rig OCed like this, is this normal. I want to set it back to normal 3.3ghz specs

    It's temps you need to be watching and stress testing for stability. AMD's love to be OC'd but you will learn about adding voltage and adjusting for FSB and voltage droop. In reality the system on day to day stuff doesn't feel that much faster and it's your choice if you want to push things. Remember only risk what you can afford to lose when it comes to overclocking !

    I also used aida64 to see if any change was recorded. I am not sure if these results mean anything. These are two pics. First top pic is my standard 3.3ghz and the other bottom is my 4.ghz 22% OC. I Can see some values have changed, not sure if for the better or worse.

    Looks good to me. Nice overclock without pushing FSB or voltages correct? All you did was adjust the multiplier to 20x's. I would leave it and use it for a couple of days and makes sure it's stable.

    What Alan said also keep In mind you can turn the multi to 20 /200 to get a solid 4Ghz now you just need to tune the voltage which probably isn't needed since you adjusted the multi a slight bit

    Keep in mind when using AMD multi it takes less voltage to control once you start going beyond that it's when you need to adjust a whole lot if you know what I mean

    As of now you are good at 4ghz
