Trying out AMD

So while at work today, I was telling the guys about my upcoming weekend project. Fixing the wife's computer. It's an old dell xps 410 that is trying to die. One of the guys said I have a few rigs I don't have room for as he moved from a house to an apartment. He said it is nothing special but it works. I said sure, how much? He said nothing, I just need room. It didn't have any ram or a video card, but my old file cabinet has spare parts so I have it running now. I'm going to play with it, then back up the wife's files and set it up for her. I will use the ram, video card, and hard drive from the dell to up it some more at that point.

Hiyya Dude this is the board mate and it looks like you could up the ante with CPU the RAM is DDR2 as you probably know and I cannot find how much it will support hopefully 4GB at least. But for a freebie mate I would have a crack at getting it ship shape.

PS Mind you the LAN speeds are pretty ordinary and I think the drivers you might have to use the individual manufacturers as it only lists up to Vista64 as an OS I meant to say too maybe a the board would benefit from GPU nothing fancy of course. If you liver any closer I have a drawer full and they would be free too

Well FWIW I have an older machine I use for testing that I was given and it has the max 4GB DDR2 in it and albeit with an Intel Q9650 the boot is slow and I did stick a GTX 650 and a decent PSU in the old one was dying and I had a few spares lying around in and the thing is just invaluable.

Yes I agree. It isn't top of the line, but it will suit for what my wife does. She web surfs, checks email, and a little facebook. No gaming or heavy needs so it will do just fine.

You are playing with AM2+ that was the winning platform like 8 to 6 years ago

You could probably get a 965BE and put down some decent benches on the flip side though DDR2 is a bottleneck but still will do a decent strides when put to the test
