OK, I checked the math:
Last I checked an i5-3570K stock speed is 3.4 GHz, so 1.35 x that is 4.6 GHz. Doable with a high end air cooler.
I don't know how well the AMD overclock, but I guess you are right, they prob can't do 35%, so maybe not worth OC then.
1.35x stock 8350 4 GHz speed is 5.4 GHz
and for a 9590 it is 6.3 GHz
We use different rated clocks. I always use the maximum rated speed, on the 3570 that's 3.8ghz.
3.8ghz 35% OC is 5.1ghz. Even at 4.6ghz it would need a exceptionally good chip and the very best air cooling available to keep from a melt down. Most 3570's on high end air can run 4.2-4.4ghz and be safe for 24/7. Some guys claim to run higher but I don't think I would risk my chip for a extra 200-400mgz. Put the same OC under water and you can have low fan speeds and a quiet system.
A lot depends on your luck with the silicone lottery, sometimes you get a chip that clocks great, sometimes you don't.
The 9590 has been recorded at 8343.92 mhz, that's a 67% OC. CPU-Z listed the fastest 8350 at 8794mgz, and the fastest i7 at 7174mgz. None on air. AMD holds all the cpu OC speed records and Intel holds all the memory speed records.
That is a pretty juvenile response.
You only get Turbo boost clock frequencies when not all of the cores are active and the thermal and power usage of the cores is acceptable. You only get 3.8 GHz for an i5-3570 when only one or 2 cores are active and under the right power conditions. So assume two of the cores are running at 3.8 GHz and the others are off. Your processing power is (1/2)*(3.8/3.4) = 55% of all 4 cores running at 3.4 GHz.
So if you want to use your logic and compare that turbo processing power of 2 cores to all 4 cores overclocked to 4.6 GHz, it will be (4.6*4)/3.8*2) = 2.42 = 142% overclock.
Otherwise what you would be comparing is a two core processor.

We base the overclock from the chip's Turbo Boost frequency, otherwise it's not an over clock IMO. A stock clock albeit Turbo. The pros will do the very high OC's by running only one core and under LN2, liquid nitrogen or liquid helium. They also use cherry-picked chips, testing one by one till they find one that ramps up well and push it till it dies.
Mind you here at SF and the real world we use whatever is sent to us. We don't clock one core, I got my place on our leader board even with Hyper-Threading on.

OK Guys calm down, I am not interested in overclocking, tried it and it just worried me too much I was going to break something. Maybe its the 35+ years in the electronics repair trade where I saw what people did to stuff by trying too hard and in some cases not hard enough. I put a Hyper 212 Evo with the 2 Corsair fans in Push Pull and stuck the Cooler Master fan that came with the heatsink in the rear case position. CPU is idling at 45C acording to Hardware Monitor and 20 to 30C core temp package reading which should go lower once the Artic Silver 5 has cured.
I would watch that temp, it seems high to me. My only intel DT, is a i5 in a extremely small case, itx mobo and oem (small) heatsink/fan. At 3.8ghz it's cpu idle temps are in the 30-32C range (ambient is 23-24C), with all four cores at 3.8 it runs 34-38C at light to moderate loads. Any reading below ambient is in error. See what others with more Intel experience have to say about it.
The chip in question is an AMD FX 8350 and the temp is almost exactly the same as the FX 8320 in the machine next to it. I think 40C is what these things read sensor wise and run at, the "Package temp" is 20C cooler. I have thrashed them both with Prime 95 and the temp reaches 55 to 58C. 58C is with new heat sink paste so give it a week or so. In any case its bloody cold outside and can use the extra heat
