Dude, I meant no sarcasm, why did you think that? I said maybe because I can't figure out for the life of me the why of the Z97 chipset. If I wanted to level any sarcasm it would be at Intel.

From all I have read, then broadwell might as well run on the Z87. Broadwell has a couple of more features and some new instructions but not much really.

I apologize for my comment, it was uncalled for.

That is OK, and I apologize for the tone of my first post, I was a little cranky at the time, but was not looking for an argument.

Decision made. We are going with the 4790K.
Now to find an LGA1150 MoBo that has the BIOS upgrade needed to run it!

As far as I know, all Z97 chipset boards will support it Bob. Or is it Rob?

Yeah just take your pick from the 100s of new x97 boards. Only reason you would need a bios update is if you had an older z87 board.

    It's Bob.
According to the article Bill posted here:
Intel unveils Devil’s Canyon, its first 4GHz CPU...
the 4790K runs at 88W rather than the normal 84W of other Haswells. That will require a change in the BIOS on the Z87 motherboard. There was one other difference too, but I forget right now.
Could be wrong - maybe the Z97 board will adjust without a BIOS upgrade, but they constantly make BIOS upgrades for new processors so I don't see why this one would be any different regardless.

I think the BIOS change in the Z87 is merely to recognize the new processor SKU, nothing more.

Go for the Z97. The boards are newer, will definitely support Broadwell when it comes out, and have newer features and i/o support (e.g. M.2 support). I imagine the Intel USB 3.0 is less buggy too (I would hope).

But if you decide Z87, I would make absolutely sure the MB manufacturer will support the 4790k. It also may be that the Z87 MB manufacturer may put out a quick and dirty BIOS to support the new processor and that is the end of their support for the MB - they have moved on to Z97.
