Newegg has a large selection of refurb'ed ssd drives until Jan 4, 2014, most all manufacturer's and most have a 3-6 month warranty.

What I would like to know is how the big, fat, hairy heck does one refurbish a SSD?

Usually, put a new controller on it.

There is also the common occurrence of people buying stuff, messing up on the installation, throwing their hands up and blaming the component, then sending it back muttering "piece of crap!".

The retailer tests the product and finds nothing wrong, but it is an open box, so they try and recoup by selling as refurbished. Sounds better than "open box" in some cases. I got my phone for a penny that way.

I would imagine it could involve any/all of replacing controller, replacing NAND chip, secure erase. I personally don't do refurbed, although depending on the product, and the warranty, you get a great deal. A Guy

That should be labeled recertified, not refurbished.

Probably, but there are no written rules on it!

Refurbished means they dusted it off, checked it for physical damage and put it back in the box. I doubt that it even has updated firmware much less any new parts. Otherwise, it would have a full factory warrantee. I certainly wouldn't trust it. But hey, that's just me.
