    My New Computer. Impressed with the O/c.


    I have built my self a new rig (In spec)

    I have added 2x Noctua NF-S12B fans to my rad due to the fact when stress testing i was getting temps in the high 90*c's. It has helped it a little.



    As you can see, currently running at a steady 52*c with 1.512V's. @ just over 4.4Ghz I may reduce the voltage slightly, or i may try and rise it to around 4.5Ghz if its stable enough.

    On a side note, i shell post my BIOS settings and will someone be able to help me out what i can do to perhaps overclock it even more or lower the temps?

    I just did a Stress test with IntelBurn Test. It breezed it no problem.



    You can see that the stress test had used 3681Mhz (3.68Ghz) when stress testing, Why is this?

    One scary thing is, the hottest the CPU got was 97*c. This was only for a second or 2 and probably only occurred twice in the whole process, but i herd that these chips have a very sensitive sensor's on them and a majority of the times, give a false reading? What would be a acceptable temperature when its under load (Which i guess it'll never be under 100% load ever again as i don't own any games that is that much FPS hungry.)

    That's an awful lot of voltage for an i7. I hope you don't damage the chip.

    1.5v... That is waaaayyy too high... The reason why it drops to 3.8GHz is because it's too hot, Intel chips usually start to throttle down at around 85 deg C. If you plan to keep it running at that voltage, I hope you have some money to buy a replacement in near future...

    Your basically frying that cpu with it set like that.

    Does a couple of hundred mhz really matter that much?

    I'd be content to have a bog standard 930 with no interference from me as performance from one of those is more than sufficient.

    If you keep pushing 1.5 volts to the core, you sacrifice the core... plain and simple.

    What you're going after at 4.4GHz isn't performance, it's more bragging rights. Which is all good and fine, except if you have to pump that much juice in order to do it; then, well, it's not a good overclock. A good overclock would be to achieve that on minimal volts.

    Perhaps you got a chip from one of the bad batches of 930's? If so, those are the breaks, but, look at it honestly, the chip is still amazing. As far as real world performance goes, I'd wager that you're not really "sacrificing" much at all.

    What you must consider is diminished returns. How many fps do you get at a safe OC of 4GHz vs fps @ 4.4GHz with chip frying amounts of voltage? My guess is that between 4 and 4.4GHz, the fps gains are minimal at best, if you get any at all, as you're already pushing the graphics card as fast as it can go even below 4GHz.

    ... but, it's your chip, your call.

    Just noticed you have an 8800. You're killing your cpu for fps gains you cannot achieve. Your video card is a bottleneck your cpu cannot overcome.

    Is that OC with or without hyperthreading disabled?

    I have to echo what others are saying - far too many volts and it's running far too hot because of it.

    It wouldn't always hit those temps outside of stress testing, but it will still run far hooter than it should.



    Also, 5 passes of IBT is grossly inadequate for any 'real' stability indicators.

    I have a bad batched DO 920 which is a volt hungry pig and tbh, going any higher than 4ghz just isn't worth the volts, or heat for virtually zero noticeable difference in 'real world' performance.

    I fully understand your point about what's another 200Mhz .2Ghz going to make? Well the simple answer is, Cos i can, i want to blag.

    I didn't know that 1.5v was damaging the chip. You will probably lol but i thought if it reached like 2.0v then it would start damaging it LOL (I'm a noob to all this). I have looked around on the web and found that 1.5 is suicidal but ideally, 1.3 will be fine but lower the better.

    As far as i'm aware, there's only 3 bad batches: 3001A117, 3001A135 and 195*****. I have batch #3951A811, I have a D0 chip which is basically 'Cherry picked', but i am unaware if the batches above were D0, i can only guess the C0 as there are no other descriptions about it.

    I have not done any frame rate testing yet, after all, i'm not using it to 'benchmark' i just want it to be a rather quick computer.

    I haven't o/c the graphics card yet (I don't know where you thought that from) but looking to get a 2gb HD4870 one. I have asked before it will be a bottle neck, some people say no, its a sales blag and others say yes. I scored 6.9 on my WEI with my graphics that i am using earlier on yesterday. We shell see when i start gaming.

    I have now dropped down to 1.3V at 4.2Ghz and it all seems to be fine. I really wish i could boost it more to 'brag' but well see.

    Well, thats a nice OC, I was never able to run my PC above 4GHz for 5 minutes, I got BSOD's. I am on 4GHz stuck after millions of try's to get above it but it wont go, BTW i'm on 1.45v and i cant go any lower to keep that 33% OC
    Max temp i go at is 45C CPU.
