right click on each instance and select go to service(s) to see which services they are attached to. There may be some services you can disable without affecting the functionality of your system.. here's lsass on an untweaked and clean 7 ultimate 64bit set up using full drive encryption:

Funny you mention those 2 because I have had the same issue with both of those on different machines. I used to use AVG all the time, but seems the new AVG realtime monitroing has caused 100% CPU on a couple of my machines, and Spybot caused similar issue on my netbook. I also had the same thing happen with Adaware's real time monitoring. I removed them all and threw on MSE and malwarebytes on all my machines and the issue went away.

When cpu time is locked at 100% while using separate AV/AS/AM/FW software it's because each is trying to attack the other. The only way to efficiently run two RT scanners simulateously is if you are able to create exceptions in each for all executables, services and DLLs the others need to function correctly. One of the reasons McAfee, Kaspersky, Norton, AVG and many others don't play well with other products that use RT scanning is because UIs have been dumbed down to the point where it is impossible to do so.

I downloaded and ran both Malwarebytes and MSE - scanned, rebooted the problem has gone away (at least for now). Thanks for the help!
