ICACLS and Printing with WIN 7 ??

A while back by dad called me saying that he could not print on his computer. What I found was that he could print fine out of applications like WORD, etc, but he couldn’t print web pages or web based email in Internet Explorer.

He is running a fairly new Dell that I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Home 64bit.
The install of Windows 7 went fine and he was fine for a couple of months before this problem came up.

I searched on-line and found that the following fixed his problem temporarily….

Method 2: Re-create the missing folder
Follow these steps to recreate the folder:
Note: you will need to be logged in to an account with administrative priviliges.
    1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer
    2. Click Start, and type %Temp% in the Start Search text area and then click Temp from the list
    3. Click File from the main menu, click New and select Folder
    4. Type Low for the folder name and click Enter
    5. Close the Windows Explorer window, launch Internet Explorer and attempt to print or Print Preview

If these steps do not resolve the issue, continue to the next Method

Method 3: Reset low integrity level on the Low folder
To reset the low integrity level on the Low folder, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start, All programs, and then click Accessories
    2. Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator
    3. In the Command Prompt window, type or copy and paste the following and press Enter
    ICACLS %temp%\Low /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low
    4. Restart the computer and attempt to print or print preview from Internet Explorer
    I had to do both 2 & 3.

A few weeks later he had the same problem again and he took his computer in to a local repair shop. They told him something about Windows 7 not being fully installed and said they fixed the problem.

A couple of weeks later he had the same problem again. I have again had to recreate the missing folder and reset the integrity level.

So my question is… What is causing this?
I have no idea what he may have installed. I recently saw CC Cleaner on there and uninstalled it.
Also, about the time this started Comcast switched from McAfee to Norton. I wasn’t happy about switching him over to Norton but I did it.

Any ideas on fixing this problem for good?

The Low folder that you added gets deleted any time a disk cleanup is accomplished to delete temp files.
Unfortunately, I know of no way to prevent this other than not deleting temp files enmass.

Do you use Disk cleanup to remove temp files, etc?
I am also running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and it happens anytime I use disk cleanup.
    The printer doesn't matter.

Okay …I used print preview to make sure I could print. I then ran disk clean up and checked all the boxes to delete everything. I checked print preview and it was okay, I rebooted and it was still okay.

I'm not sure what is going on there. I just know I have three systems that act the same way.

    Do you have UAC disabled?
