You may have to do a repair install.

    Repair Install

Of course the loud noise you heard might be a hardware problem.

You can also run a diagnostic on your disk.

So you can get to safe mode? If yes, try running from the command prompt:

    sfc /scannow

Can you borrow another video card to see if that works? I'm still concerned about the sound you heard.

It would load in vga mode. Or do you mean determining your current video card? You can open your computer and find that out - BUT MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER

When your notebook made that continuous noise, did you smell anything (like plastic burning)?

I suggest you clean your drive:
SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

    and perform a new install:
    Clean Install Windows 7

Unless you have to do an upgrade because of Vista.
