Hi,

Patching of system files is the term used when modifying files, such examples are software that alters themes and visual styles not native to Windows 7.

There aren't many advantages other than gaining more control over the look, feel and use of Windows but it comes at a very high price if something goes wrong.

If you plan to patch system files then please search all you can for information on the subject as we cannot legally advise you to go ahead with such action.

i know OS its strictly advised "do it at your own risk". How to revert back this process just by restoring the old .dll file & deleting the new 1??? e.g. recently i patched my imageres.dll file to get own personal icons but i do have the old imageres.dll file as well as advised by Arc who helped me with this problem...what are the ovious troubles this can cause?????????

The trouble caused is dependent on the files being patched. For themes (colour/icons etc.) then if not done properly can cause graphical glitches and some applications can refuse to run due to certain GFX margins (icon size, space).

If for some reason you have patched a file and have noticed issues you can run the System File Integrity app by running Command Prompt as administrator (start -> all programs -> accessories [right-click]Command Prompt). Once run, type sfc /scannow and it should revert any changes system files back to default.

One of the problems with the System File Checker is that it will revert ALL tweaks, not just the one you may try to fix. Even benign tweaks like a sidebar in Win7 will disappear.
