    recovery disc

When I purchased my HP laptop a few months ago, I backed up the system on DVD-Rs.
Can I now empty the recovery partition on the C drive and free up more space?
If so, how do I do this?

I would not suggest that you delete the recovery partition. What if the recovery dvds dont work? Granted there are ways to clean install win7, but unless you're desperate for hdd space, just leave that recovery partition alone.

If you still want to delete it, you can do so from the advanced options in the HP recovery manager that comes preinstalled. Take a look here.

On all 4 of my HP's, the "D" drive is the Backup. It's about 9 gig used out of 11 or so.

IMHO, I would leave it be. It's nice to have recovery discs also, but I wouldn't delete that factory image in case you need it one day.

    Hi there
I tend to disagree -- provided you can install a PROPER RETAIL version of W7.

Then back up your OS with something like Acronis. Create bootable recovery media from the Acronis software and then you can get rid of the hidden recovery partition.

IMO if you restore from the hidden partition you will load up the computer with all the usual bloat, crap and adware that usually comes pre-installed on non self built computers.

I would leave it alone as well. Along with the rubbish the OEM sometimes includes some useful utilities for the PC. The factory recovery DVDs may not work when you need them.

If you want to delete it but still would like to be able to get it back. Image it with Macrium Reflect (free). I have and replaced the factory recovery image to a new disk (17.5GB out of 1TB).
