It won't matter what you install on it. The Atom processor is always going to be slow. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Alienware Aurora ALX R4 OS Windows 7 x64 (SP1) CPU Intel Core i7-3930K (3.2GHz, Turbo 4GHz) Motherboard Alienware Aurora-R4 x79 Memory 4x Samsung 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (16GB 1600MHz) Graphics Card Nvidia Geforce GTX 690 (Stock) Sound Card RealTek Integrated Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dell UltraSharp U3011 Screen Resolution 2560x1600 Other Info Dell Inspiron Mini 10v (Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz; 1GB; Windows 7 Ultimate) |

I even put Unbuntu Netbook edition on my netbook, no difference.
The Atom processors just do not have the horsepower. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Alienware Aurora ALX R4 OS Windows 7 x64 (SP1) CPU Intel Core i7-3930K (3.2GHz, Turbo 4GHz) Motherboard Alienware Aurora-R4 x79 Memory 4x Samsung 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (16GB 1600MHz) Graphics Card Nvidia Geforce GTX 690 (Stock) Sound Card RealTek Integrated Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dell UltraSharp U3011 Screen Resolution 2560x1600 Other Info Dell Inspiron Mini 10v (Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz; 1GB; Windows 7 Ultimate) |

Software, no matter how good, can EVER substitute good hardware. This is the very reason I refuse to buy a Mac. Great OS, but no matter how good your OS is, it will never make up totally for the lack of good hardware. A good OS is more or less an addition to the good hardware. This is how I see it anyway. Intel Atom CPUs, especially the single core variety are very weak. If I were to ever get a netbook, I'd probably go with one with an AMD Athlon Neo x2 and 2GB of RAM. AMD has some good netbook CPUs that are dual core and are cheaper than their Intel counterparts. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number iBuyPower Chimera X58 OS Windows 8 Pro x64 CPU Intel Core i7 920 Motherboard Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Memory 12GB (2GB x6) Triple Channel DDR3 1333 MHz Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB GDDR5 Sound Card Integrated Digital HD 7.1 Surround Sound Monitor(s) Displays 24.6-inch ASUS VW246H 20000:1 Contrast, 2 ms response time, Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Razer Lycosa Mouse iBuyPower Ergonomical Internet Mouse PSU NZXT 800W Gaming Series Case Guardian Inferno (Custom Painted NZXT Guardian 921) Cooling Thermaltake V1 Fan Cooling System OC Proof Hard Drives 1 TB 7200 RPM SATA II 3 GBps 16MB cache Internet Speed 11 MBps High-speed Cable |

i would stick with 7 - xp isn't much fun any more, offers little in performance gains, and as you say finding drivers may be difficult for your new machine.
what is it? i've got a hp/compaq mini 311c - it's only got 1 gig of ram, but i can still photoshop on it (although 13inch screen isn't best for photoshop, but better than standard 10inch netbook fare). | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number mickey megabyte 1234 OS ultimate 64 sp1 CPU i5 2500K 3.3@4.2GHz Motherboard MSI P67A-GD53 Memory 8 gigs GSkill Ripjaws 1600 Graphics Card amd hd6950 Sound Card creative x-fi gamer Monitor(s) Displays samsung 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard saitek eclipse ii Mouse logitech g3 PSU antec 550 Case antec three hundred Cooling i'm a cooling fan Hard Drives ocz vertex 2e 60 gig, samsung f3 1tb, buffalo 2tb ext Internet Speed about 4 Mbps Other Info i love win7 |
