Windows 7: MRT.exe issue

MRT.exe issue

Good morning,

I am experiencing performance issues which have started about within the past 2 weeks.

The issue is that the cpu seems to be performing significantly more cycles than it should be when the computer is idle, as well as taking much longer to actually boot from the login screen to the actual desktop.

The only thing which has changed in the past few weeks that I have been able to really nail down is the creation of a number-string folder in my secondary hdd which contains a program called mrt.exe.

I am assuming this is referring to the Malicious Software Removal Tool that microsoft puts out themselves to help combat viruses and spyware. I have been looking online for information on this issue for about the past day or so to try and get a feel for information on any problems associated with this program.

Most of the issues that mrt.exe has been related to before are in relation to the Avira anti-virus software causing unusual behavior which is similar to my problem. However: I have not ever downloaded any software from avira so this cannot be my underlying issue. I use the newest AVG free as well as Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Blaster as my primary anti-virus/spyware programs. These have been working well for me in the past and I have made no changes to them recently either.

Another problem I am having is that when I try to manually run mrt.exe (this was a suggestion I found for trying to fix an MRT related issue) is that it will scan about half-way through the drive and then totally freeze and lockout the computer, necessitating a hard restart to return it to operability. I have run it 3 times overnight and each morning I find it completely locked up. I ran it manually by downloading the november MRT update via microsoft's own website and then running their file itself.

Can anyone please give me an idea as to what may be happening with this program?

Forgive me for not uploading my full system specs. I am currently at work and cannot recall ALL their details without running cpuz on the computer itself.

Thank you for your time.
