I run 1 gb of RAM on an old Pentium 4 HP 510 notebook with Avast and several gadgets and it never even hesitates. Of course I edit msconfig>Startup to the bone (only AV and gadgets) and keep my program list lean. However number of programs doesn't matter - only which ones are allowed to startup with computer.

That said, since it allows it I hope you get the extra gigstick of RAM.

I did the above tasks I believe a few days ago and I still have the same lag effect afterwards. The idea about doubling RAM for me is kinda out of reach since I don't have the money to do it at this moment.
ram is very cheap these days. see here
    £18 for 2GB

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions while I was off doing an errand and couldn't respond in time. It looks like its recommended that I double up my RAM to 2GB, but the price they offer is too high for me unfortunately. I will be highly if someone were to donate two 1GB sticks to me, but since the forum has rules against giving out personal information such as my address due to phishing I think I'll have to rely on what I have now. Thanks to everyone that responded to this +1 rep for everyone who posted suggestions.
