Windows 7: Hard Drive WEI

Hard Drive WEI

Windows experience index gives me a 5.9 when booted from a 7200RPM 500GB HDD (eSATA).
It still gives me a 5.9 on a new custom build with 2 seagate barracuda 500GB 7200RPM drives on RAID0.
I was wondering, does it measure the R/W of the 2 drives as 1, or just 1 drive?

You won't get higher than 5.9 with the WEI unless you use an SSD.

Its possible to push the WEI above 5.9 for platter drives but very hard to do so, you'd likely need several disks in raid config. Thing is one can push up read/write rates but seek times are the weak link.

I have to basically go with Airbot on this one. Though it is possible to get a "slightly" higher score as Bill pointed out, the likely hood of achieving this is slim to none if you're not running a raid setup. And even then, it's hard to do.

Bottom line, I wouldn't waste brain cells on this one. As Airbot said, if you want a higher score, get an SSD drive.

My two cents.

Ok. So the only solution would be to get an SSD? Would the HDD actually be slowing the system down (7.3-7.5 everything else) given that there are 2 of them or does the WEI just like low seek times?

Yeah, I wouldn't just go off the WEI to determine that HDDs are super slow or anything. The WEI is just a basic benchmark. HDDs have lower access times than an SSD, it's one of the highlights of having one, but having 2 HDDS in RAID overall isn't half bad either.

Try and find some posts about SSDs and read up on them, then you can get an idea of where they have better points.
