Windows 7: Dissapearing icons

I hope I am in the right forum for this, but a strange thing happened when I booted up this morning.
All the shortcut icons on my desktop are missing
Everything else is o/k and the taskbar at the bottom of the screen is there.
Anyone have this before?

have you tried right-click on desktop >> view >> show desktop icons?

maybe it's been turned off accidentally?

do the shortcuts show up in the desktop folder in windows explorer?
