superfetch out of control

I leave my pc on when going bed, one of my drives is an external old hdd (via usb) so is noisy when in use. Soon will be replaced but for now am using.

When I went bed last night it started churning away for nearly an hour until I got up and disabled superfetch, superfetch is good but seems to have no limits when machine idle.

Is there a better way to manage this situation, perhaps make the machine think its not idle somehow.
